American River College Top Questions

What should every freshman at American River College know before they start?

Erin

The first thing that I would tell myself is that it is completely ok for me to go to a community college, even if everyone expects me to go straight to a four year college. This is because I am not sure what I want to major in and it is more economical to go there than another college. I would also tell myself that I should not stress out about the transition because I am competent enough to make it through. I would also tell myself that eventhough I do not know many people who are going to ARC, I am going to make a close friend that will help me and I will also help her get through this and have fun. And lastly I would tell myself that I should listen to my dad and continue playing soccer at ARC because I will have fun and make closer friends.

Hi Edward I would love to give you some advise knowing that you are thinking of continuing your education past twelfth grade. Do not be shy of befriending proffesors and councelors they can give ideas to you and be of help. Visit the financial aid office and look into grants and scholarships as well as work-study. With this advice you do not need to limit yourself to finding part-time work. Do not be overly concerned of completing classes in the same time as other students around you. Edward take an introduction to accounting class and some computer classes.

If I had the opportunity to go back and talk to myself as a college senior, I would stress the importance into transitioning from high school to college. Throught the transition process, there are many problems that a high school senior may run into. An example is not knowing how important your grades are when you go to college. It is very important for a colllege freshman to immediately begin studying as soon as college starts. College courses are far more rigorous than the courses of high school, the only way to get a good grade in courses is to study for lectures before and after classes if there is enough time.

If I could go back in time and give myself advice I would tell myself to look at the options. Their are so many colleges that you can attend. Fill out applications and scholarships to help get you where you want to go. Don't just settle for the easiest thing out their, life is gonna be hard. As for the transition, take advantage of the college tours and weekend sleep overs in the dorms, they will help you get a glimpse of what college life is all about.
