As a result of our open-minded academic philosophy, one unfortunate stereotype is that Brown students don't take their education as seriously as students at other schools. For example, people take note of our option to take any class S/NC, and then say things like "Brown doesn't have grades."

Brown students are often stereotyped as left-wing radicals that enjoy smoking far too much weed and are not as career-oriented as students at other Ivy League schools.

Crunchy, granola-y type kids who smoke a lot of weed and don't study

Brown students are seen as very liberal and very stuck-up. The other schools in Providence see Brown kids as stuck-up, wealthy students.

Brown students are super liberal, whiny and annoying, pretentious hipsters. Other stereotypes are that Brown students don't do any work, are all slackers, are all rich kids who bought their way in.

Whenever I say I am from Brown, people always say "Youre one of those smart kids." I guess stereotypes are what other people say and that is about all that I have heard. Oh yeah, they also say, "where is Brown?" no one knows.

Brown kids are all supposed to be liberal hippy drug addicts. Also, we're all supposed to be smart, happy, and good and beirut.

That we are the "laziest" Ivy League, we take all of our classes pass/fail, we are degenerate and liberal crunchies who have naked parties and smoke up all the time.

With our open curriculum, our emphasis of the term “concentration” over “major”, and our absence of a “Brown Republicans” organization until just last year, it’s no wonder that Brown gets the stereotype as the crazy liberal, anti-establishment, Ivy filled with tree-hugging hippies who refuse to adhere to any form of structure. To many, the typical Brown student smokes weed, rocks out to the Flaming Lips, and majors in Egyptology, Modern Culture and Media or any other of our somewhat obscure departments.

The main stereotype about Brown students is that we are all hippie liberals.
