What should every freshman at Capella University know before they start?

Christine

Having only been affiliated with Capella University for less than a week I will use my past experience as a student in Iowa. I was told by my High School guidance counselor that I was not college material and that I should stick to my ballet career. Well I took that as a challenge and attended a University in Iowa. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of learning! The professors had such a plethora of information that they made you want to learn more! It even spurred me on to attend Nuclear Medicine School! Every class has benefited me to this day, whether it be the study habits, communication skills, or the psychology of working with people from different cultures. The college experience has made me a student of research. I believe I have become addicted to change and look forward to each learning experience! I thank the University of Northern Iowa for the personal encouragement for me to go further in my studies and wishing me success in my future!

I believe going to school is a wonderful experience it helps me better life not only for me but for my daughter as well. As a single mother I need to continue to learn so I can continue to teach my daughter to be a better person. There is as the financial parts in life were I have to support the both of us and without school and continuing my education I don't believe I can do that.

For the past two years at Iowa Lakes community college, i have learned how valuable it is to attend; my first year of college i didnt do so well, so when i came back my second year i decied that i would try my hardest on all my classes and i did. I am a Resident Assitant for the 2009-2010 year at iowa lakes. Attending here you get the best one-on-one work with the teachers and you really get the since of a "Small town community" i think its valuable beacuse you dont have the stress of a big city and wondering if your going to be safe or not. At Iowa Lakes there are many programs offered, there are four campuses that are within a half hour away to take classes. Out of being here my advantages is that i get the one on one work that I need with the instructors and i amd close to home. Attending here has helpped me grow tremendously as a person, i have learned how to be a self advocator and strive for the best. At ILCC your learn to grow as one and with your peers.

So far, what I have gotten out of my college experience is that no matter what school you go to whether it is online or at a campus, you need to stay focused in order to achieve your goals in becoming what you desire to be in your career and try to not let others deter you into achieving this goal. I have heard from so many others that tell me having a degree is so valuable when looking for a career, and I see others that do not have them that seem to be struggling and trying to stay ahead. I wish I learned 10 years ago that receiving your degree before you get married, before you have children, and before you start your life is the most important thing you should do. Then you will be able to pass this valuable information on to your kids and teach them this by example, and then they will hopefully do it the right way!

Like most others I could say the lack of student aid, and/ or my bad marriage was a major factor in my decision to drop out of college. But, the fact is that I dropped out because I was not academically prepared. I lacked self-discipline and was emotionally disengaged. I have a very good job and felt like college was not a necessity. Unfortunately, I soon realized that I had instilled this behavior in my son. College has not been important to him. He was under the impression that anyone could land a good paying job. When I started at BCBCSFL in the 1997 that was true, but not today. I am back in school not only to better myself, but to encourage my son and show him anything is possible; and that you are never to old to learn. When I re-entered school back in 2007 it was not easy. I did not always pass my exams and I even failed a class. But I got up, dusted myself off and told myself that tomorrow would be different and each day would be brighter. So, what I have gotten was the confidence to try.

I feel as though I have gotten to open many doors to career opprotunities, and make many lasting friendships. One way I have been able to open career opprotunities is by gaining my degree, i will have a much lower chance of being laid off from a future job, which I have had toubles with previously. Also, I have had the ability to take internships, which has helped me to better decide on that career I would like to have in the future. Another way that my college experience has been valuable to me is through my gained ability to make long lasting friends. Through my participation in clubs, and study groups I have made many friends that I can connect with and relate to.

I made a good time magemnet routine for myself because I have a job and go school part time. This school definately helped me manage my time alot better.

What have I gotten out of my college experience you ask? Well I have learned that when it comes to colleges one should really think twice about what school you wish to attend. I chose to attend a tech school because I could get a BA in three years instead of four. In order to do so one needs allot of help from financial aid, something I for one don't get. For example my advisor forgot to ok my private loan that I had to get to help pay for school. My advisor then called and asked when I am going to pay them, even though there was money sitting at school waiting to be finalized, but to make matters worse my advisor has lost important documents that contained vital information about me and my parents. So in closing its best to choose a well rounded school not one that get you in and out with a degree in a hurry and treats you as such.

Although I have not yet started courses at Capella, which are scheduled for this coming August, I do have previous college experiece and have grown to appreciate the true value of an education. Not only is exercise of the mind important to a happy and fulfilling life, but the challenge of getting a good education will help open many doors that would otherwise not be available to most. Continuing my education helps me keep a positive attitude and sense of fulfillment knowing that when I am done I will have my degree and access to a serious and relevent career.

It is extremely valuable for me to pursue my education in order to continue my growth throughout my current career path. I have learned that it's never too late to attend and anyone at any age can take on the challenge. I continued to put off going back to school, but can certainly see it's advantages regardless of when it happens.

I would have told myself to go right out of high school. It would have been easier to adjust to college at that time. While I am happy I decided to continue my education, I really wish I would have went right out of high school, mainly because it would have been easier for me to stay in the swing of studying and I wouldn't have had anything else to worry about but school.

In high school, teachers and counselors told me how important it was that I find a college or university to attend and also a career path to follow. Back then, I did not understand the magnitude of what they were telling me. I thought that it would not affect me adversely if I skipped this step in life. After living life in the real world for a while, I have learned that I was wrong. Had I known then what I know now, I would have told myself to focus on getting my Associate's degree in general studies during that first two years since I did not know which career path to take yet. And while I was working on that, I would have told myself to get involved in other activities, clubs, groups, etc. to expand my areas of interest and awareness of what is out there. I may have discovered sooner that I want to be a teacher had I positioned myself in an atmosphere to find that out. I also would have tried desperately to convince myself that completing a college degree really and truly is a crucial step in a persons' maturity and personal growth.

If I were able to go back into time and speak to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to stay in school no matter what. I would also explain that there is plenty of time to live the rest of my life. The time invested in college now will determine the course of my life and the decisions I make as a high school senior will follow me and affect my life and my family?s life. I can sacrifice now in high school or later it is my choice, and hopefully I will make the best one possible.

Joe

I would tell myself to stick it out and work hard at obtaining that degree without delay, because it really is vital to your future. I would also tell myself to take advantage of student working opportunities to get into the field that I am studying for.

The only advice I would ive myself would be to stop worrying. Try your best and you can do anything.

Jessica

The advice that I would give myself if I could back in time would be that college is not that intimidating and that I can do it!! Although I had no support at home or at school in making those decisions to go to college I would let myself know that I can find the answers and do the research myself, and that it really is not that hard no matter if it seems like a mountain that I may not be able to see over at the time. I would let myself know how much harder that it would be in the future for me and that I would be saving so much time if I could do it now and that all those things that I thought were so important would not be there in the future. I think the most important thing is giving myself the confidence that I can do it and that I would be so proud of myself in the future.

Leesa

I would give my advice by taking prep college courses.

Yvonne

If I could go back in time as a high school senior, I would advice myself in taking my future more seriously and to use my academic talents a lot better. I would be more sociable and be more active in clubs, sports and organizations both at school and in my community. I would sign up for classes that would transfer or be able to be applied as college credits. Overall, the best advice I would give myself is know where I want to be in the future then go get it. Do not be afraid and let obstacles get in the way of what it is you want the most.

Sarah

I would tell my self that going to college right out of highschool is the best thing to do. That waiting makes it harder all around. You have to worry about paying bills, family, and having time to study.

Jessica

Looking back at the choices I?ve made since high school (not to mention the unexpected paths my life has taken), I would offer myself several pieces of advice if could go back in time to my senior year of high school. First, I would caution myself to carefully consider my college major before officially committing to one. As an option, taking core curriculum courses for the first year of college would allow me more time to make to the decision. It doesn?t seem to be an important decision at such a young age, but it is ? going back to school as a full-time employee, wife, and mother is not an easy path to take. Second, I would share information about scholarships and grants. There are many that are not commonly known and these offer an excellent opportunity to ease the cost of college. Lastly, I would impart the knowledge that higher level learning is an invaluable experience; you may not apply everything you learn ?in the real world?, but you will find a place for most of the information. And, more importantly, the experience prepares you to transition from school life to work life.
