Florida Institute of Technology Top Questions

What should every freshman at Florida Institute of Technology know before they start?

Kitrell

I would say, Kitrell make sure that you choose a career in something that you will enjoy even when you get old. Do not look at the right now but think about the later. College is expensive so apply for as many scholarships as you can along with any athletic or band scholarships you can. If you get as many and as much help as you can the less money comes out of your pocket and the less student loans you will need. Also learn as much as possible and apply these things in your daily life to keep them familiar.

If I went back in time to offer advice to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to not choose a college according to who offers the most financial aid. Instead, I would tell myself to choose a school where I would be able to fit in with the other students and get involved with the research opportunities I am so fond of. At my current college, I am one of the few females, and because of this I am often lonely, even when I am surrounded by my closest male friends. As a high school senior I did not think that I would be lonely in the dorms or in class, but when I am the only female in a classroom of thirty other male students I feel a bit taken aback and intimidated. I would also suggest to my high-school-self that I search for a college that offers undergraduates position in research laboratories. My research position in the paleoclimatology lab at my school is my most treasured college experience and I value the work I have done with carbon dating, microscopic analysis, and thesis presentations more than anything else in my college career.

Actually being in high school, I found it was very easy than college. High school was a piece of cake compared to college. The advice i would give to myself is to keep up the good grades and accept the fact that there are priorities in life we need to live up to. Having an education in life will make it easy for my future but it will take the time and dedication. The effort does pay off and will make you successful in life and be able to be comfortable in life rather than being catergorized as the poor in today's world.

If I could go back to talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to work harder and apply myself more! I would prefer to go back prior to this and tell myself this for my entire high school career. It seems that most seniors slack as it is their last year, I was no different. I wish I had applied myself more and worked all that much harder to maintain good grades throughout.

You do not know it all. Work hard, play hard, love, laugh, and never look back. Life can always bring you down if YOU let it. Never give up and remind your family and friends you love them with all your heart. Keep trying when the wolf is at the door and remember always hold God's hand and he will never fail you. Pray often and without ceasing but most of all just listen.

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS. This school is completely worth the cost, but it is EXPENSIVE. Follow through with clubs, too. Don't just be apart of them to have your name on the list. Be active in them, do something with them. You'll get so much more from participating, even if it means cutting down your nap time and nights out with pretty much the same people. Otherwise, you're ready. You know what you want, and you know what to do to get where you want to be. One last thing, though- don't ever forget who you are. There will be so many new and different things flying from every direction. If you lose your sense of you, you'll not know where to turn to reconcile these things that you learn in and out of the classroom. Always remember that you ARE strong and capable and unique amongst everyone you know, and those that love you truly- they love You, exactly the way you are.

As a successful high school senior involved in sports, clubs and numerous activities, it always seemed easy to fit my academics into my schedule. The most important advice I woudl give myself as I entered my first year of college would be to make sure to use a daily planner to stay organized and schedule all activities including study time. With a planner, it is much easier to see what needs to be done when and removes the stess and anxiety of worrying about when tests and papers are scheduled. Studying should be given top priority and when possible scheduled for the same time daily. In addition, I would remind myself to take advantage of group studying. Since we all live on campus and have the same basic interests, it helps to realize that everyone else may be feeling just as overwhelmed and that we can help each other out. Most importantly, I would remind myself that I need to remember to go out and have fun and interact with other students. Although academics are always a priority, enjoying college life is a once in a lifetime experience that I wouldn't miss for the world.

College food at the beginning might not seem so bad, but as time goes on, it gets worse and worse to the point where eating it is unbearable. This means that i should not get the unlimited meal plan. People who you share a bathroom with are not always the cleanest of people, so always wear sandles, get disinfecting wipes for the toilet and from the beginning, lay down the ground rules on using the bathroom.

I would tell myself that the road ahead won't be easy, and although sometimes you feel like quitting don't give up. Because in the end you'll be happy where you are at and it will pay off.

Boy, you had better focus and learn how to study better! I know it is pretty easy to get through these high school classes with minimal work and still get decent grades, but somewhere down the road it won't be so easy. "You better learn how to study, you are going to need that skill in college", crap I guess Mom might be right. Maybe it isn't such a good idea to try to "study" while watching tv, texting, socializing on Facebook and MySpace, eating and playing XBox. I know I am a good multi-tasker, but naybe this is as ridiculous as I've been told (over and over again). You know that new building the city just spent a huge amount of money to build, that is called a library. It is a quiet place for people to do something called reading. Check that out. It may come in handy sometime when you hit a college campus. Reading is something else you might want to try. Actually, physically, hold a book in your hand and take in the information enclosed. What a concept! Alright, Man, it's time to step it up and get yourself ready.
