Grand Valley State University Top Questions

There are thousands of activities to choose from at Grand Valley. There are several clubs to join based on interest, which can vary from anywhere to Pre-Pharmaceuticals Club to Swing Dancing Club. There are also fraternities and sororities to join, and also many different sports. I recommend joining at least one club that ties into an academic interest that you have, even if you haven't officially declared your major yet.

Campus ministries is really big, Greek life is all anyone ever talks about, LGBT is highly advertised, A Capella groups are good, and other student created organizations.

I'm involved with Swing Club, Ballroom club, and Pipeline (a LGBTQ leadership club). The dancing clubs are great, and very low stress. Pipeline is a fantastic club--I'm learning so much about creating social change! Athletics are very popular--there's a team or a club for most sports. Oh, and our Quidditch team is pretty popular! We have literally hundreds of student groups, so I guarantee there will be a group you will like! There's various cultural, performing arts, academic, and totally random groups. If not, you can always start your own! Also, our Greek life is growing. I'm see a lot more involvement with all the frats and sororities on campus! We have homecoming events, big football games, and the President's Ball (a dance) every year. There are a lot of guest speakers, plays, events, etc. We usually have a couple famous people come and preform (comedians, musicians, etc). There is usually some sort of campus event going on everyday of the week, which is really nice! People party a lot off-campus, and often go to different colleges or home for the weekend.

There are many organizations to be involved with at Grand Valley. Basically, if you have an interest, there is a club for it. The GVSU website has a section called "Stuey", which is the student life portion of the page, and it lists all the organizations recognized by GVSU on campus. There are many sororities and fraternities to be involved with, as well as honors societies, chapters of organizations such as "To Write Love On Her Arms", and many more. Grand Valley holds "campus life night" at the beginning of every fall semester, and students are able to walk around the gym in the fieldhouse and stop by booths for each organization participating. There, they can sign up to receive email notifications and gain more information about groups they are interested in. Many of these groups, as well as GV in general, hold guest speakers and other special events to encourage student involvement on campus (not necessarily just within their group). For homecoming every year, one of our student production committees sponsors a homecoming concert with a big-name celebrity. So far since I have been attending, we have had Jason Derulo and Mike Posner as well as Bo Burnham. Tickets for Jason Derulo only cost students $10, Mike Posner tickets were only $20, and Bo Burnham's concert was free... so this definitely encourages students to get out and meet new friends (and have fun while doing it!)

Sports groups are very prominent, but as I said in a previous answer--there are literally hundreds of clubs to get involved in. Football games are a big hit and can be a lot of fun going with a group of people. It's also a ton of fun to take the 50 bus downtown to explore. Be sure to hit up Georgio's Pizza!

As far as dating, there are a lot more girls than guys here. It can be difficult to find people to date, depending on what kind of person you go for. We have homecoming, and the President's Ball (a dance) every year. The most popular organizations are various student unions, greek life, and various clubs. I'm involved with Swing and Ballroom club, and I was involved in a LGBTQ club, Out and About. The dancing clubs are great, and realtivly low stress. It's a social club. Out and About was more informative then social, and I felt welcome, but at the same time I didn't. There's a lot of couples and hooking up. There are a lot more girls than guys here. There are a lot of guest speakers, plays, events, etc. Athletic events are pretty popular--there are a ton of them. People party a lot off-campus. The dating scene isn't that great, honestly. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, it means I just got back from going to swing downtown. There's not much to do on weekends, except party or hang out.
