What should every freshman at Marquette University know before they start?

Throughout my experience in college I learned the importance of having a college degree. In this economy it is hard to find a job. But if you have a college degree you have a better chance of finding one. I have a seven year old son and I am teaching him the importance of getting a college degree so that he won?t have to struggle to support his family, like I am. At times it is hard to be a wife, mother and student all at the same time, but I am trying my best to strive to reach my goal and get my degree in order to get a better job and support my family and give them the life they deserve.

College is a whole other spectrum of education and fun in which I am priviledged to find out. It's great to find an understanding and supportive college like Stanly Community College. SCC is not only conveniently located ten minutes away from me, but it also has a wonderful Graphic Design program to further my life long goal of success. It would be wonderful to be able to complete the program of which I am interested in, which is, Associate in Applied Science.

I always knew I would go to college. All my life, I've been a good student; the oldest child who paved the way for her younger siblings. I had no idea where I wanted to go to school when I started my search, and visited Marquette first at the request of my parents. As soon as I stepped on campus, I knew that I would end up there, despite my initial attraction to the idea of a big state school. Marquette has proved to be not only a place where I fit in, but a place where I have grown as a person. I've learned just as much outside of academic buildings as I have inside. Marquette provides so many opportunites, and I've realized that it's my own responsibility to go out and get what I want. I have met people that I feel like I've known my whole life and who I know will remain in my life forever. The bond that I feel with every member of the Marquette community, students, faculty, and alumni alike, is indescribable and I can't imagine being anywhere else. We Are Marquette!

Since I was thirteen years old, adults labeled me as a "young adult." The first half of this title I agreed with wholeheartedly. However, the second half I found rather perturbing and ill-deserved. But after nearly two years at Marquette, I have taken more steps toward maturity, independence, and adulthood than the cumulative eighteen preceding years. The distance from home has forced me to learn to take care of myself almost entirely - something I believed utterly impossible when graduating high school. But learning to clean my laundry and bathroom is not, thankfully, the highlight of my education - Marquette has given me a working goal for my future, as I can now see myself as a working woman - as opposed to the young school girl that I have been for so many years - in either research, teaching, or manufacturing. Why, do you ask, has Marquette been valuable to attend? Marquette has given me a dream and the means to accomplish this dream. Marquette is preparing me for the rest of my life - a life I have chosen, that I am working towards, that I will live.

Coming into college I never knew what my true potential was, this wasn't because of my parents, but simply because you doesn't truly know your limits until you are able to spread your wings. I believe that this year of college at Marquette University has given me that ability. I now know a lot more about myself and know that I can handle being out in the real world with little problems. College is a whole different experience than anything else I have done before and I feel like there is no better experience to begin a persons transition into the working world. Within a short time you experience a range of diversity and education never before found in the previous institutions that you have attended. College opens doors to what life will be like once you are out on your own. You make the decisions and you are the one to feel the consequences but it is all in a controlled, safe, and important enviornment. My college experience has set me up to be a better and more professional person throughout my entire life. That is the best part though, you still have your entire life ahead.

I believe that diving right into a four year college is a huge wake up call for many students. It is such a new environment and learning process for each individual student, because they no longer have their parents constantly pushing them. There is a lot of temptations of partying, drinking, and late nights out that make it hard for them to obtain good grades. I feel in a way that a two year college goes by at a slower pace and allows students to develop there individual study techinques and what it will take for them to establish excellent grades. I have learned that if I want to suceed, I have to do it on my own with no help from others. I have to be serious and committed to my study of work and always makes sure that it is my number one priority. Confidence and determination is what is going to pull me through in the end.

Ever since I can remember, I have been told that education is everything you need to get ahead and make something of yourself. I realized what that truly means at the end of my freshman year in college. Prior to that, I was under the impression that college just involves going to classes and getting a degree so that I can get my dream job. Now I realize that college is a process just as important as what career I end up pursuing. It helps me shape the person I will be for the rest of my life. It is a tool to learn about vast subjects and I learn to apply them to my own personal life to make myself a better person. The past two years of college have been a wonderful learning experience, and I look forward to finishing it with a degree in Psychology.

Some people might claim that college is a waste of time; that we should just have certification tests and teach ourselves the information. Afterall, all we do is read books right?! In my opinion wrong! I believe that college has provided me with more than just a scholarly education. I have learned many other things including independence and social skills. Going away to college has forced me to take care of myself in a save environment where there are still people to help catch me if I fall while not holding me up. Going to school in a big city at a Jesuit university has also given me many social skills that will help me in the work force. Before college I primarily associated with people very similar to myself. Marquette however has encouraged me to get out into the community and help those less fortunate than me. This experience has provided me with the skills to interact with many different types of individuals. College has also provided me with the opportunity to experience the type of work I could be doing with my degree, before my graduation. I could not possibly gain that from a book now could I?

I would tell myself that everything happens for a reason. Things always manage to work out fine. Don't stress so much and take things more lightlly, especially in my personal life. Having a good relationship with that guy in hiigh school and leaving him behind broke my heart. He mattered so much to me and now I know that it not as significant , as important as having a good relationship with my parents. Also, that I should not falter, keep up those excellent grades like I had in HIgh School. Be proud of myself.

I would tell myslef to apply myself harder, and not wait to go to school, since i have have dead end jobs ,and have wasted all this time when i could be doing something i love, instead of something i hate, just to pay the bills.
