Describe the students at Mount Holyoke College.

My favorite thing about MHC is the diversity. I've met people from all around the world, and even though people hang out with friends from their home countries sometimes, they also spend time with other people. The majority of domestic students are very liberal, but they come from pretty diverse backgrounds. We have a very large LGBT population, including several trans students, so people who are uncomfortable with a loud and proud gay population may feel uncomfortable.

There are some interesting people on campus. We're a very open minded and liberal campus for the most part. Not many people talk about how much money they have or don't have or will have... thats rude.

A student who would feel out of place at Mount Holyoke would realize it immediately. One needs an open and creative mind and a passion for change and academic challenges. These are the people Mt Hoyloke strives to accept. If you are accepted here it is a huge accomplishment, but it is a good idea to stay over for a night to see if you enjoy your experience. I think this is true for any college. All financial backgrounds are present. And almost all students are politically aware, and many are very active.

Alexis

Mount Holyoke students are generally very accepting of various backgrounds. At times, it can endorse one particular group over another and marginalize some. For example, the campus is very predominantly liberal, and those who are conservative can be made into minorities. Sexuality is a pretty big issue here - who is what orientation, etc. It usually isn't easy to tell what sort of financial background a student comes from.

Jess

most of my friends are international kids who are really cool and bring in their own ideas. its always to get a new perspective on everuything and they bring in a non-western point of view to class which is awesome.

Nico

Probably the best thing about Mt. Holyoke is the student body. Good job at that. Very diverse and well to do and everyone brings in their own culture so there is no exact one culture for Mt Holyoke at that.

Ryan

very diverse, very different, you get so many different kinds of people that it amazes you. you'll learn a lot.

Andy

Whatever you're looking for you'll find it here I can assure you. Students are generally non formal to class and wear jeans or sweats. I dont like to dress up to clss so I dont. We intermingle with everyone and that is a good thing to do I believe.

Chris

Diverse. You learn so much from their culture its amazing. Thats the best thing about MOHO. My friends are from all over the world, LITERALLY.

Janice

many many international students widely represented from all over the place along with students of other racial background and ethnicity, black, brown, hispanic, asia... i go to class in sweatshirt and sweatpants most of the times but some girls dress up too. i roll out of bed and walk to class so im a mess and a lot of kids do that for early morning classes. usually jean and a tshirt? same old stuff

Caroline

As I said a lot of white rich kids with their ponies. We do have a kickass equestrian team I hear but it still is predominantly white and rich. It is a small college so to expect anything different is wrong too I suppose.

Lynn

Most students wear whatever is comfortable to class. Most Mount Holyoke students are either from the general area, i.e., the Northeast, from the western side of the country, or are international students.

Lauren

Mount Holyoke students are freakishly friendly. Everyone is made to feel welcome on campus. Although there are distinct groups of people (the rugby team, the equestrian team, the crew team) the campus is small enough that everyone knows and interescts with most everyone else.

Alex

there are many groups.

Casey

I found it to be a racially/ethnically diverse student body. Politically its pretty left, and we lefties love to preach to the choir. If you're left leaning expect scads of affirmations that you corner the market on objective truth and just generally being correct.

Annie

you must be accepting to fit in here. we have people from all walks of earth and people aren't afraid to let their true selves shine.

Andy

Perfect student body. Someone who is bigoted would probably feel out of place here.

Toni

All types of students everywhere, blacks, whites, hispanic, latin-americans, asians, indians, europeans, you name it and we've got it. The good thing is its well accepted and not generally looked down upon, though international kids do get the 'oh, you're international, you should be speaking' attitude now and then but there are just so many clubs that are led by international students across campus that such an attitude does not last for too long

Stef

All such experiences have been relatively good. Non I feel I can get along with everyone because everyone is pretty nice. Jeans, a blouse and shoes or boots. Yes but not a lot you tend to stick to the people who are like you or in a group with you. Well you would have a sports group like maybe squash, a group of Nepalis, a group of juniors and a group of people who live in a particular dorm. most MHC students are from the east coast I think not really sure they are so many people from all over. Financial background of most Moho's is middle class to upper middle class and very rich. There are also people who are less well off but the majority are in the middle class and above. Yea students are politically active to a certain extent predominately center left. Of course money is always very important, though some students talk about non profit careers as well

Cathy

Mt. Holyoke has a HUGE and diverse student body. If you're white then you almost feel like a minority at times. I was at Dartmouth one time and I was amazed at the number of white kids there which shows how many international kids mount holyoke has, its just awesome......
