What should every freshman at New Mexico Junior College know before they start?

The advice I would give myself is that I need to realize going to college is a lot and going to have to take responiblity. I would also tell myself to fill out scholarships to help out my parents in any way I can. Going to college is a lot of money so filling at as many scholarships I can is what I would have done as a senior. But not noticing that college was so much, I just let all the scholarships. Now I do regret not take advantage of the scholarships. I wish I could go back in time and be a senior in high school just to fill out the scholarships.

As far as academics are concerned, I would try harder to retain the information I learned. A lot of the information learned in college classes builds on what is learned in High School. I would also try harder to apply what I learned to real life in order to help it stick in my mind. I hate being a situation and thinking that there is a way that I can solve a problem if only I could remember how to do it. A high school senior should absolutely start working on college applications and scholarship applications as soon as possible. This takes a lot of work and time, but the benefits can be substantial. I also think that seniors should take a little time to have fun and socialize with their friends as, many times, they get really wrapped up with current and future academics and extracurricular activities. I would also really try to think about my career plans because it helps when picking out a degree plan.

I would have given myself the advice to be more prepared than I already was. I tried to prepare myself financially, mentally, etc. for the transition, but being more prepared would have helped greatly. I did not recieve financial aid, so I knew it would be tough, but I believe if I would have started saving up money before my senior year I would have been better off financially. Also, I would say talk to the school counselors more and the teachers in my major in order to become fimiliar with the campus and staff. Knowing the teachers and who to talk to is an important factor in order to stay on track.
