In looking for the right college, what it really comes down to is finding somewhere where you can visualize yourself comfortably fitting in. Yes, you want somewhere that will challenge you academically, that will help you in your eventual career path, and that will be attractive on a resume, but honestly, those aren't the most important aspects of the decision process. Find a place that feels like home, that fits in with your values, and where you can easily become a part of the community. A place where you fit. Because the things you take with you from college are so much more about relationships and experience than homework and time in the classroom. Remember this as you begin your college career. Maintain a healthy level of stress about school and work, but make time to foster friendships and experience new places and things. Absorb everything around you and be grateful for the amazing blessing that being able to attend college is. It's your time to branch out in the world and really seek out the person you're becoming, so take advantage of it. And when in doubt: take a nap. :)

Most importantly, do not limit yourself. Although a university may seem financially out of reach, too far from home, or too challenging, at least apply. Give the application process your best shot, and then go from there. Do not settle on the university you choose. If there is choice you know is a better fit, listen to your heart.
Secondly, look for people who are open to making friends. Whether you are a freshman or transfer student, there will be others in a similar situation as you looking to make friends, as well as upperclassmen or returning students who are welcoming and friendly. Do not feel that a certain individual or group is the only option for friendship and in turn overlook some amazing people.
In addition, consider traveling abroad in college. Though it does cost more, the same type of opportunity will never arise again. The travel locations and memories are worth the extra money.
In college there are many new experiences that take place, from academics to emotions. Although there will be some really hard times, push through them knowing in the end you will have gained wisdom, knowledge, and amazing experiences.

To parents: Let your children make their decision. Don't try to persude them to go with a college that is closer to home, or is the one that YOU think is the best for them. Though they are young, and have made many mistakes, at this point, they know what they need, and let them figure that out with LOTS of your love and support.
To children: Don't pick a school just because it is close to your home. You may do some of the most growing when you are outside of the areas you know best. Also, figure out where would love to be in the world for college, and just go for it, even if you don't get in.

Pick a school that will give you the most opportunities to fulfill your goals. Think more than just what programs are offered, but also the environment you want to be in. The size of the school can change how close you feel in community. Urban or rural locations can change the resources available and places to go on the weekend. Make sure you are able to handle the distance away the school is from your home in regards to finances. The bottom line is that you pick a place that meets your needs whether or not you are sure of what you want to study.

Bottom line, you will receive a decent education from most colleges. What is important is that you find where you fit best and remain true to who you are, or else you will find yourself unhappy and discontent. College is about finding out who you are and growing and developing as an individual and a young adult. It is a time to challenge long held beliefs, to weigh them, and to refine them in fire. Don't look at the cost: cost doesn't make it the "right" school... same goes with any reputation: academically vigorous, party school, etc. It doesnt matter what someone else sees or writes about concerning the school. You need to choose where you will grow the most. In order to grow, you need to get involved and reach out; step out of your comfort zone and see the world with new eyes. Study abroad, try new things, meet new people. College gives you amazing people in close proximity, it is your job to take advantage of that and develop life long friendships. Lastly, don't lose focus. Remember that college is to learn, so study and be disciplined, but dont forget to have some fun.

Finding the right college is a dynamic process. You want to be a good fit for the program as well as if be a good fit for your personal goals. Programs works differently and better for different types of people It is best to know what kind of environment you learn best in and what will be most important for your development as a person. Start by finding out as much about yourself and goals as well as about the colleges' programs and environment. This could be as simple as the size of a college or their financial aid. Either way, take careful consideration of as many factors as possible.

First and foremost, the students must feel comfortable and right at home. That's the most important factor. Secondly, see if the parents and students can afford the school.

Make sure you look into the social environement of the school first. Check and compare religious and social values with that of the applicants. Also, check the course listings to make sure they are of interest.

When looking for the right college be sure to look at schools that are excellent not only in the major that interests the student, but also in other majors. This is very important because much growth occurs during the college years, as a result, many students will change their major and interests. The location of the school will tell you a lot about nearby opportunities. It may be helpful to attend a school near a big city for optimal employment and internship opportunities.
To make the most of your college experience, be willing to participate in every activity. Attend a school that has spirit and get involved with the athletics. Attend a school that has an excellent study abroad program. Students who study abroad will gain a better understanding of the world, will gain a better understanding of themselves, and will have an experience of a lifetime. Get to know and take advantage of the faculty and staff at your university. They will be able to help you get the most out of your collegiate years. Make the most of this opportunity by getting to know your professors and working hard in your classes to leave the best impression possible.
