What should every freshman at Spring Arbor University know before they start?

Lloyd

After coming to Spring Arbor University for a year and a half, I have learned many things about myself and I have grown as a person. One thing that I learned about myself was that I have a passion to learn new things. I also realized how much I valued education and my desire to be wise. In my middle school and high school years I had no drive to learn and did not care much about education and school. I viewed both education and school as a waste of time and my effort matched my views on that matter. It was not until I came here to Spring Arbor that my views changed. Something that I have received from my college experience is better social skills. Before attending Spring Arbor University I was a shy and quiet person. I would always keep to myself and would rarely approach people. In the middle of my first year at this University I felt like I had transformed into a different person. I am more outgoing and very comfortable with my social skills, giving me more confidence in everything that I do.

From this college experience I have been able to gain wisdom. When I first arrived on campus I had the belief that I would be able to ease through every class and when that did not happen, I quickly developed poor study habits. Contrary to popular belief, all-night studying really is not helpful. Coming to a point where I truly felt helpless was not the greatest feeling in the world, but I was able to learn from others about the importance of time management. I commute five days a week and usually work over 20 hours a week, so my time management became abysmal. I could not find a balance between school, work, and spending time with those I cared most for. However, it was because I listened to others' advice, that I was able to develop better time management abilities. It has been valuable to attend college because of the relationships I have been able to build. By building these relationships, I truly believe that I myself will be able to grow as a person. It has been really exciting to know that these relationships truly will last a life time!

The only time I attended college was at my local community college for Running Start. There, I was surrounded by all ages who wanted to learn as much as I did. I was able to learn and understand from my more mature classmates. Though classes were longer than typical high school classes, I liked how it wasn't five days a week. I was treated as an adult and was assisted when needed from my classmates and faculty. I was learning a lot more due to my surroundings of serious learners. At high school, everyone slacked and was treated like children. Our curriculum at the college was challenging but gives you the breath of success. I was nervous that I would fail due to the fast transition from high school to college, but I realized that it was the best choice I've made. I did wonderfully in all my challenging classes despite all the stress and pressure. I proved to myself that I can overcome these obstacles. That college, is what is needed for my next step.

I have found my true identity, and I love it!

My college experience so far has been incredible. It is a big jump from high school. To me college is a valuable thing since it is the way to a better future. Also, I set an example for my younger brother who at first did not want to go to attend any college. To him he sees that it is possible for anyone to get ahead and attend college.

Its been said that knowledge is power. I believe that statement the full extent. In order to be successful in life you have to have knowledge. For every day I go to class I’m learning something that can further me as a person or further my understanding of the world around me. Knowledge is what I have gained out of my college experience thus far and has been the best thing I have done for myself. My schooling has given and will give me the foundational information I need to know for the career path I will choose when I graduate. That is why it is and has been exceptionally valuable to attend Spring Arbor University.

I have gotten alot out my college experience by helping patients in a time of need. Also it help me get closer to my career/ goals and field. It's very valuable to attend college because not only will you be certified or recieve some type of degree; you will have the correct knowledge and outlook on your dession. Along with that you will always succeed in that work industry.

Out of my college experience thus far, the ultimate thing that I have gotten out of it is a second chance to succeed. In high school I was a rather average student. I earned pretty good grades, but they could've been better. I could've played softball, but I didn't get involved in many activities. I regret not doing more as a student, but the one thing that bothers me the most is that I could've been an honor roll student walking across the stage, wearing a colorful robe on Graduation Day, instead of sitting in the audience with the other ghosts who had on white caps and gowns. After graduation, I promised myself that I would do my best in college, and since then, I've kept that promise. Friends, family, and advisors can testify to this claim. The high value that I hold on my college education is also evident in my GPA and my current quest to seek new clubs and organizations to join. For the first time in my life, I have recognized my potential, and that knowledge is power. This fact fuels the enormous value that I hold on my college education.

My freshmen year of college I learned an incredible amount about everything I could of ever imagined. Not only did I learn more about God and how to have a stronger relationship with Him I also learned more about life. My view of life and how to communicate with people changed and as a result it helped me to better my relationships with people on the campus. Not knowing a whole lot about what my strengths and weaknesses were, the faculty and my friends helped me to get a glimpse of these things. This then narrowed down what I should do for a career and how I could be used in different ways not only at school but in my home town. My college experience has opened my eyes in so many more ways than I could have ever imagined and made me a better, more confident person in order to fulfill the purpose that God has planned for me.

When I was little, I told myself, I would never go to college. I wasn’t good at schooling, unless I worked hard. My dream was to be a stay at home mom. When I got to high school my senior year, my mind changed. God was telling me to go to college, Spring Arbor University. My four siblings before me went to Spring Arbor and my twin brother and I attend there now. One thing I have gotten out of college is that I need to follow the path that God has for me! I choose Spring Arbor because it’s a Christian college. The professors want to see students succeed! I think back to when I was little and me saying I will never go to college, but now that I’m at college going to be a kindergarten teacher, I know I am in the right path that God wants me to be. It’s important for me to attend college because God wants me to change children’s lives in the community that I will teach in. I will show children the love of God through me!

Although I am only in my second year of college, I have learned that by chosing to continue my education I made a decision that is benefitting my life now, and will continue to improve my life as I enter into my field of study. I have learned that it is important to be a well-rounded student, but also to study what you are interested in and have a passion for. I changed my major during my freshman year because I was unhappy with the direction I felt that I was headed in. By being able to incorporate my faith into my learning experience, I am building a foundation from which I will be able to base my life upon once I graduate. Attending college has been the best decision I have ever made; at times it seems difficult and that there is no way through some of the struggles, but I am becoming a better person through it all.

Foremost, I have earned a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Secondly, I have learned that by setting goals and by working hard, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Spring Arbor was very encouraging and understood the roles of a working student. My experience was very positive, I met some incredible nurses, all who worked and attended college. I learned many things from my fellow students and faculty. One of those things was the importance of support during college. Some students were going through divorce, some were having kids, others had kids that were grown adults. But the most valuable information I learned from my fellow students and fellow nurses were to always support each other and to surround yourself with positive, supportive people. This advice helped me to graduate Summa Cum Laude in November, 2009 with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing degree. I have continued with my goals and have been accepted to start my Master's degree in Nursing- Nurse Anesthesia specialty at Michigan State University in January, 2011. Spring Arbor was a stepping stone and an encourager of these dreams to get a Master's degree and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Each year, countless high school graduates apply for, prepare for, and enter in to a college campus in the fall. Their motivation for doing so is to recieve a higher education that will equip them with the tools they need to succeed in their future careers. However, although recieving a good education is the main reason I attend Spring Arbor University, it is not the reason that I love my college so much, and it is not what makes SAU the place that it is - a valuable and irreplaceable learning center for young adults. Spring Arbor is a valuable school not because of the classes it offers, but rather because of the extra-curricular activities and events that take place on the SAU campus. At Spring Arbor University, I have learned how to become a better leader, how to care for others, how to invest in the lives of my friends, and how to live a life with purpose - one centered around Christ. Even though I've learned a lot, I know I have a lot more to learn during my time remaining here at SAU, and I look forward to each day that presents new opportunities, challenges, and adventures.

It is unfathomable to consider my life without the benefit of a college education. I daresay I would not even know myself apart from it – so much passion, color, and vibrancy would be lacking from the everyday of my existence. My mind would be small, the world around me would be small, and I would be an aimless wanderer – adrift forever in the tumultuous sea of idea, thought, and action. My education serves as my tether to reality, my jumping-off point for future discovery; it is a reminder that what I would have called ‘impossible’ is not only within my reach, but it is, in fact, very possible. Drawing upon the encouragement, support and preparation I received from my professors, I found the courage to embark upon a semester abroad at Oxford University in England. I mustered the strength and focus required to compose a 50-paged honor’s thesis. Most importantly, I learned to take myself and my abilities very, very seriously. My soul contains a fearlessness that it did not know before – the unknown is now just something to be conquered. I am armed with the inimitable aplomb that can only be gained through a college education.

I have learned the meaning of hard work and that it is important to give your best in everything you do. I've learned to work well with others in my community and that even if you do not get along with everyone, everyone has value and you should treat them with love and respect. I've learned that everyone makes mistakes, but if we take our mistakes and learn from them they make us into people who are far more respectable and wise than we otherwise would have been. Even though college has definitely had its challeges I am glad I went because it has helped me to grow up and take responsibilty for my life and my actions and to realize that everything I do has a consequence, whether good or bad. I do not think I would have realized this if I had simply stayed home. I am also thankful my professors and all they have taught me, I feel like I am a much wiser person thanks to their teaching and that ,when I graduate, I will be able to do well in the working world.

During my time at SAU, I have learned to be a critical participant in the world around me. I do not have to simply go through life and listen. I can listen and analyze what I hear, based on what I know. I can do research to verify what I'm being told. In fact, I should do so. I listen with a critical mind, not listening for mistakes, but listening for the truth. I can get involved and be an active member of society. It's more than just talking about it-it's getting out and doing something. I as a Christians, am not called to simple tolerance, because tolerance breeds mere apathy, a simple ignoring of our differences. No, as follower of Christ, I am called to love, to reach out and help. To be tender. To be careing. To listen. I have learned (or am beginning to, as the lessen is something that will take eternity to grasp) what it means to truly follow Christ and to truly love God and love my fellow man.

My college experience has been a challenging journey. Not just mentally and physically have I've grown, but spiritually as well. I'm an African-American student attending a diverse college where our number is very few. It's hard to adjust to different enviroment especially coming from my hometown. However this college is very inspirational. The people here are genuine and full of love-- the love of Christ. I came in as a freshman lost not knowing what to expect in the real world. Here I am a Sophmore succeding in so much and telling my story to incoming freshman who were having similar problems as me. One importnt thing i did learn attending this school is that even though we are not the same (race, gender, economic status, etc), we all have the same equal opportunity as everybody else to succeed and go above and beyond what others can do. If only we can believe in God that he can do the impossible, everything that we expect to happen will sure to follow. For God's word says "I can do all things through Christ which strenghteneth me", phillipians 4:13.

I am now attended at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology and my major is Avionics. My long terms goal, upon completion of college, is to enter the United State Air Force as an officer and a pilot. I hope to continue to fly as a pilot, for a career or hobby, after I have done my years of service to the military. Over the years I learned that college helped me become anything that I dreamed to be. My experience here is all about airplane. Although this should not hinder my ability as a student, I will need help financially. I have developed my goals during the years that I have been a student a Gateway Institute of Technology high school in Saint Louis. I work hard seek knowledge and understanding, and have tried to maintain good grades and hone my mental, physical, and academic abilities as the motto I always follow ‘knowledge and skills overcome superstition and luck’ to make the transition from my country of origin, Vietnam and to serve the country of choice, the United State.

Well I have got alot of things out of my college experience one of them is that the hard I put into my work I can achieve just about anything that I put my mind to. If I didn't attend that would just make me look like I wasn't cut out to get my education.
