I have a 2.5 average at the moment but I'm pushing for 3.0 and above

Depending on the students level of interest in a certain field will ultimately affect their academics. I am a triple major because I saw different opportunities within the university. Most universities will not recommend or approve a student to major with three different degrees so that is why I like how UALR offers that. Most incoming scholars have a high retention rate vs. average students that attend the university because having a goal and a direction is very important. It is important to plan for your education because passion and interest is the key to being successful in the field.

Professors rarely know students names early in the college experience, mostly because it has been a commuter college for so long. The teachers are very helpful if you ask for assistance. The best classes are in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS). The language barrier from Science and Mathematics Departments is often a complaint among students.
I have never had a problem meeting professors for coffee, or during office hours to discuss grades, exams, and future aspirations. The academic requirements may be a little overwhelming for students who do not have strong study habits or strong foundations in mathematics and science. Students are incredibly competitive for local, state and national honors. The education is directly designed for real world application and not for just learning. Most professors hold other positions and have multiple occupations similar to the students attending the universtiy, so they are great with offering networking and information for internships and job opportunities.
My major is Professional and Technical Writing, the department is highly respected and is one of the most sought after professions for graduates. The Grant Writing and Writing for Web courses are critical to the resumes and attractiveness of the program. Graduates of our program instruct at institutions from the Ivy Leagues to other contininents. Students learn to study as they progress through the pipeline, UALR is respected for refusal to accept fraudulent graduates, so the requirement to study is not one that can be avoided. '
UALR host many of our countries most knowledgeable speakers from Business, Engineering, Technology, History, and Politics. Intellectual discussions are in abundance and proximity to the Clinton School of Public Service allows students to have an opportunity to observe and participate in panels on topics of national importance.

Class participation is far less than other places, because the school is designed for the full time working student, and people who have school as a means to improve upon career options. The high quality education that I receive here has pushed me to take on new challenges. The school work is not easy, but challenging and pushes you to want to learn more. The teacher no you by name and offer their help at any time. Everyone is willing to assist you, from our Math and Chemistry tutoring labs to the Rhetoric and Writing Center, all dedicated to providing educational aid. As students, we work with each other in study groups all the time making sure that everyone has a good understanding of the information. UALR is geared toward the betterment of its students socially, intellectually, and ethically whether for a job, graduate school, or medical school.

Academically, I think its among the best. I'm a political science major, and I believe that we have some very impressive undergraduate professors of political science.

I think this question will differ by major. I am majoring in Information Science, Mass Communications and Liberal Arts. Some of my courses are tough, but my professors are always there to help me.
You must attend class. Not going to class hurt me during my first year. This is because the faculty members care about your overall learning experience. You can't have a great experience if you aren't in class.
My favorite classes are my art and production classes. I love having the freedom that comes with them.
The only thing I dislike about UALR academics is the core. We spend half of our college years retaking courses that we took in high school. I would like to have more freedom with my core.
In addition to great classes UALR prepares every student for the real world. Many students are able to find a job before graduating. My Information Science professors and advisers send us job opportunities every few weeks. The opportunities are amazing.

Most professors remember students even after 3-4 years! In my experience, I have professors that I've taken one class with them freshmen year and we still wave at each other and have small talks here and there. And surprisingly, they still remember my name! Especially when you declare your major, you'll know all the teachers in the department and most students become great friends with their professors.
There's a mixture of classroom settings. The classes I like to choose are seminar classes rather than lecture classes. A seminar class is like a big conversation. Rather than teachers talking for the majority of the time, teachers join in conversations (related to the classroom topic) and exchange ideas with the students. Even outside the classroom, I find myself continuing the seminar we have in class and do it as casual talk.
Since I'm an art student, I have a lot of studio classes also. I enjoy all of them. Most semesters, I try to take 3-4 studio classes along with the required core courses. If you enjoy your major, it's not really work, but more like a sample setting of what you want to do for the rest of your life. I'm used to taking 18+ hours (6-7 classes) every semester, while still keeping sane and have a social life.
