University of California-San Diego Top Questions

A large portion of students are from LA area or Northern California, and there are some out of state and international. Everyone is pretty casual, you'll find a lot of flip flops year round. Students usually interact with people within their organizations, whether it's Greek, professional fraternities, clubs, sports, etc.

I think the student groups that feel most out of place are international students but they tend to stay together and live with other international students and local students. There is a lot of emphasis on diversity here at UCSD but you will see a lot of students of the same race together but it is not unusual to see mixed races hanging out together. Most of the students come from middle class (or above) status families, white and suburban neighborhoods. Students tend to wear very beach-like clothes. Shorts are always popular (even in cold weather). A lot of students also skateboard a lot here on campus.

My classmates are people who tend not to like to go to class and usually multi-task when in class.

UCSD isn't a politically active environment compared to say other UC schools. You may occaisonally hear someone in front of the Price Center on the way to Geisel library screaming that "You're all going to hell!" or "Sinners beware..." etc. but that's about it. People are chill, exactly what you would expect from a college centered around a beach community.

My classmates are intelligent, outgoing students, but are also all competitive and interested in excelling academically.
