Campus size is just right. Best thing about UCSD - location and acedmics. I spend most of my time smoking herb in the dorms, or working out in the gym, or enjoying the scenery. UCSD administration is alright...they can sometimes be helpful, sometimes nonexistant, sometimes a bit absurd when it comes to involvment in student free time. RSOs get paid to fine the innocent.
Biggest controversy- well they speculated I was running a porn distribution business out of my dorm which turned out to be false - I guess that happens when you have too much time on your hands.
There is not a lot of school pride.
They painted over the decorated underground hallways which is absolutely ridiculous, and studen co-op is losing business - great things.
One experience I'll always remember? -- too many. Selling my roomate in a shopping cart around the dorms, 30 people crammed in one dorm room on Sun God...UCSD catering...
NEED MORE SOCIAL UNITY!!!!

UCSD is too damn big and it is still expanding. What is the need of six different colleges? There is no point in having different GE's for each college. A lot of people get fucked over if they get into the wrong college, such as Roosevelt college for science majors. And transferring over to Muir college is hard as shit since you have to convince the hard-ass counselors that the transfer is essential for your academic career.
When I tell people that I go to UCSD, they ask me why I'm at such a mediocre school that is boring as shit.
I spend most of my time in the library, in my room, or in my girlfriend's bed.
There is no college town here. UCSD sucks.
UCSD administration sucks for making me take two full years of MMW and not letting me transfer to another college.
There is no school pride. What is spirit night anyway?
UCSD is unusually boring and dull, especially on the weekends where everyone seemingly disappears. It's like a scene out of "The Day After Tomorrow."
I will remember getting fucked over by my MMW final. SIX TIMES.
Students generally complain about how stupid MMW is. They say that you'll appreciate it after taking it since it makes you a much more well-rounded person... NOPE. Fuck that shit.

The best thing about UCSD is that there are a lot of concerts. I've gotten to seen some of my favorite bands for free through some of the concerts here, and I dont know of any other college that has as many free concerts as we do, so we're pretty unique in that sense. One thing I would change would be just the way the college is set up. If you have a friend in one of the other colleges, most likely your going to see them about 3 times in the whole year. Its just too big and totally not made to bring people together. O that and now ridiculously strict the campus is about drinking. I mean we're in college people, its where you drink. I came here and couldn't believe how strict it was, which adds to the whole non-social aspect. Its a huge problem/bummer. Most people react with a impressed OO when i tell them about UCSD. i think we have a pretty prestigious reputation for good academics. From other college students within the area i usually get a sympathetic Aw, becuase they know there is no partying at UCSD. When i lived on Campus, i spent most of my time in my suite, or in the Muir Quad, my college quad. I really liked the quad there because it was in the middle Muir and you got to sit in the sun and see people as they left and went to class, randomly adding and subtracting from your group you were sitting with. I would say, "what college town." One of my biggest issues with UCSD is that its in La Jolla, who's citizens seem to be in complete denial that UCSD resides within it, there is no college pride in La Jolla. Besides insanely tight rules about drinking, Administration is harsh when it needs to be. Sun God is one experience i will always remember, its an amazing day with lots of antics and fun that is a wonderful memory-making, or memory losing, experience.

My favorite thing about UCSD is the academic and social atmosphere -- while I feel the drive to excel in my studies, the student body has a relaxed demeanor, which keeps me from feeling what could be high levels of pressure and competition. I'm not a particular fan of all the construction work that goes on all year round on campus. I understand that the school is renovating and settling, considering its recent opening, but at times, the noise and blockades of some of the construction sites can be disruptive during class, if the room is near enough. I like the size of this school -- I'm always meeting new people, but at the same time, the student body hasn't grown to a size that is too large for the faculty to adequately teach. If I tell people I go to school at UC San Diego, they usually miss the UC portion and assume I mean I go to San Diego State. I spend the majority of my time on campus somewhere in Muir -- the quad, the lawns, my room/lounge, etc. I love it everywhere in Muir because it is so communal. La Jolla is a college town, but everything is beyond walking distance from the university so it's hard to get off campus sometimes. Skipping a couple questions ahead, I think there is a lot of school pride within each of the six colleges, but as a whole, I feel like UCSD's school spirit is a lacking. I think the intracollegiate competitions, like the unolympics or the spirit night activities are unusual, mainly because they divide the school's spirit into six groups. That, and the never-ending construction projects. I don't think I can choose a particular experience I will remember best. Everything about my first year at UCSD has been memorable in an amazing way -- but as a group, I think I will remember the nights my friends and I stayed up until 4am, talking or playing board/card/random games in our residence halls' lounges.

I think that one of the greatest things about UCSD is the college system. It makes the huge university feel smaller. WIthout the college system, the university could definitely seem way too big, however the colleges give you a feeling of a smaller, closer-knit community within the university. The college system allows you to get to know a smaller group better while still having the opportunity to meet students from all over the campus. So, because of the college system within the university, I think the size of UCSD is just right.
When I'm on campus, I don't hang out too much because I don't live on campus. I go just for class. But when I am hanging out on campus between classes and such, I hang out it Price Center the most often. Price Center is basically where everyone hangs out during the day between classes and such because it has become such a social place and its where the food court is. I'm either in Price Center or in Geisel Library studying.
La Jolla is definitely a "what college town?" There is not much for college students to do in the nearby surrounding areas. There is the beach of course (my favorite), and places to eat and shop and stuff a quick bus ride away, but if you don't have a car it can be kinda difficult to get to some places. And as for the social scene, there are almost no bars or anything in the area surrounding school-you have to go to Pacific Beach for that. And there is also no greek housing which also cuts down on the social life. It still exists but you definitely have to have a car because "greek houses" (usually 4-6 people from a chapter) are spread out all over the surrounding towns/cities.

I love how renowned the science programs and professors are here at UCSD. The school is really large, so perhaps class size could be smaller for better attention. I think parking still needs much improvement. I spend most of my time in classes, lab work, and lunch at price center.
Tristan
best thing: Ramachandran's "Brain Disorders" class
one thing i'd change: bringing Wendy's back
school too large, small or just right: eh, just right. I don't know! what a weird question
how people react when you tell them you go to UCSD: "oh wow, smarty!"
where do i spend most of my time on campus: in a lab
college town or "what college town?": "what college town?" la jolla's known for the BEACH and it's summers (minus school)
opinion of UCSD's administration: none
biggest recent controversy on campus: just heard about the guy who played his sex tape on the UCSD channel, but i'm not sure how long ago that was
is there a lot of school pride?: eh, not really
anything unusual about UCSD?: not that i can think of
one experience i'll always remember: DOTS!
most frequent student complaints: "parking sucks" "where the hell's the shuttle!"
Christine
the location is amazing, but La Jolla kind of sucks because it's not college friendly at all. However, PB , downtown SD and SDSU are within 15 min of campus. sometimes the school is too large, but at the same time it's nice to constantly be meeting new people and not have everyone know everyone's business. One thing I would change about this school is the lack of school spirit. There are desperate attempts to make sporting events exciting but being Division II in most sports and not having a football team just makes it hard to want to go out to games.
Liz
Best thing about UCSD is its location- it is gorgeous.
One thing I would change is school spirit, get a football team.
The school is just the right size, I really like the 6 college setup. It feels like a private school within a public school.
People are usually impressed. UCSD is a good school.
I spend most of my time in my college but I'm really busy so I'm in meetings around PC/Center all the time.
What college town?
UCSD's administration seems to be doing a very good job. (not really applicable as I haven't had to deal with them personally)
The biggest recent controversy is probably the Trent Jacobs scare for the Greek community.
No, not at all.
UCSD has a lot of clubs/activity on library walk but it doesn't feel like the "college atmosphere" I expected.
I will always remember meeting my roommate for the first time.
The most frequent student complaints concern on-campus activity and the rush in midterm/paper assignment scheduling.

The best thing about UCSD is that there is no pressure to be wild and crazy. I would change the layout of the school because its really hilly and takes forever to walk from one side of campus to another. People generally say, "thats a really good school" when I tell them I go here. I'm only on campus if I'm attending class or sorority events. UCSD's administration doesn't care that much about being nice (the UCSD Extension staff was very unhelpful to me this morning). The biggest controversty on campus would be the suicide at Gilman parking structure a couple years ago or the Trent Jacobs expose (for the Greek community). Absolutely zero school pride except for people who are involved in their colleges (RAs, OLs etc). I wil always remember the Christmas window decorating contest in ERC freshman year when my suite went all out.
