What are the most popular student activities/groups?

scott

The most popular activities during the winter are skiing and snowboarding and the main group that facilitates this is Boulder Freeride. In the summer everyone hikes, rock climbs, or mountain bikes.

Paul

The most popular student activities seem to involve a combination or poor choices, alcohol, and drugs. Maybe all three. As far as actual activities/groups I have no idea. Everything here seems to be geared towards underachievement and misplaced pride.

CU Boulder has a few prominent activities and groups on campus. The Herd is a major organization that puts together skiing trips, bowling nights, and lots of other fun activities. There is also a fairly large fraternity/sorority following and all the house associated with Greek Life are on the hill which is about 5 minutes from campus. It is a very good location and a great way to meet new friends and make strong relationships. The CU football and basketball games are our biggest sporting events and always depict the strong unity CU students feel here at Boulder. I lived in the dorms this year and meet a great group of friends on the same floor as me. The doors in the dorm are usually open and everyone is always friendly. I was involved with the CU JV Club Hockey program this year and it was a great experience. As a freshman, I helped the team win some crucial games, learned new plays and offensive/defensive positioning, and stayed in great shape. The dating scene at Boulder is very good, we were ranked the number one party school in the country because we have plenty of beautiful women and men on campus. This can be attributed to our commitment to be healthy. Boulder has the least obesity in the United States. There is always a party going on you just have to find it however, usually frat houses only let in get girls and close friends. On Saturday night you can go bowling at the UMC or take a walk down Pearl Street Mall. Honestly I rarely go off campus as a freshman because everything I need is here. If I'm going leaving campus, its usually to party or by groceries for the dorm.

The most popular off-campus student activities at Boulder are easily skiing and snowboarding. There are a number of organizations on campus that are affiliated with them, like Boulder Freeride, the largest collegiate ski and snowboard club in the world, run by 12 students currently enrolled at Boulder. Kids also love going to sporting events and supporting the Buffs, particularly football and basketball games. Speaking of football games - Boulder students definitely like to party, often. Gameday usually involves some drinking and getting riled up for our team. Obviously, not everyone drinks or smokes, but many people do. Typically, students like to go to house parties, apartments, or fraternity houses on the weekends - for example, last Saturday, I went to two different apartments. It's easy to jump from place to place and meet new people when you're with a friend who knows someone who is having a party, who knows another person down the block, etc. When it comes to what the people in your dorm are like, there's really no one way to describe it. I know some people who live on co-ed floors and are super close with their neighbors, I know people who live on all-girl floors where doors are never propped open, I know people whose best friends live all around them. It really depends. I happen to live on a floor of all girls, and I get along really well with a lot of them, but they're not my best friends. My roommate ended up being one of my closest friends (I got lucky), and I actually met my other close friends through her. She's from California and knew a ton of people right when she got here. I also met a lot of people during rush (I dropped in the middle and didn't join a sorority). Sorority/fraternity rush might not be your thing but it is undoubtedly one of the easiest ways to meet a ton of people. I ended up getting along really well with a few girls and while three ended up in sororities and two of us didn't, our friendship hasn't faltered. Fraternities and sororities definitely have a presence at CU but feel significantly less serious than at other schools - about 9{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of guys end up in frats and 16{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of girls join a sorority. One of the most prominent traditions at Boulder is the huge celebration on 4/20 each year, which is a big holiday devoted to smoking weed. Thousands of people come to Boulder for April 20th each year, making it the biggest known celebration of 4/20 in the world. Obviously, that is not the only time of year Boulder kids like to get high; plenty of kids smoke everyday, a few times a week, or just on occasion. I guess that could be considered a popular activity as well. Don't get me wrong - people are totally enthusiastic about school-affiliated activities and clubs, too, and Boulder definitely gets some cool speakers. Off the top of my head, I know both Common and Bill Nye (the Science Guy) took the time to stop by and share some of their wisdom just last semester. Whether they're mountain biking, skiing, skateboarding, hiking, swimming at Boulder Reservoir, snowboarding, or just taking a stroll be it with a club/organization or on their own, Boulder students just like to be outside and enjoy their beautiful surroundings as much as possible,

Greek life is huge at CU Boulder. Study abroad and alternative break trips are also popular and encouraged. Dorms are very friendly environments. Even if you don't play a sport, it is always fun to attend one of the events on campus. There are also theater shows, musicians on campus doing shows, guest speakers and much more. The first few weeks of school are host to many free events to get students to interact, get to know campus and have fun. Parties are popular, but if you would rather not party, there are always other activities on campus such as bowling, laser light shows, movies, etc. If you live in a dorm, there will be even more activities to choose from. The city of Boulder is small and more quiet than cities like Denver, but there are still things to do, and places to go.

On any given night there are about a million activities one can partake in. Although Greek life is not comprised of a large percentage of the student body, their parties draw large crowds. Athletic events such as football and basketball games also draw large crowds and generally are celebrated with large pre and post parties. If you walk around "the hill" at night you will encounter many house parties where students are mostly welcome to just walk right in even without knowing the owner of the house. Each year the 4/20 celebration draws tens of thousands of people to the Norlin Quad. Even non-smokers partake in the celebration just to see it once. There is truly nothing like it in the world. As a general observation, students at CU don't like to enter into committed romantic relationships. Much of the student body is fit, attractive, and outgoing which leads to a lot of casual hook ups and commitment phobia. I myself am in a relationship within the Greek community, which is rare, and a majority of both mine and my boyfriends friends are single.

For the male trying to find parties on the weekends, frats are pretty important. Tons of girls always go to frats, whereas a house party would probably have slightly more guys than girls. However, if you branch out and make friends, finding parties shouldn't be too hard, but if you're a little shy, it might be tough.

There are hundreds of different students groups and activities offered on campus. They can range from groups like College Republicans to CU Students Against Modern Day Slavery. In addition club sports, intramural sports here are huge from the water polo team to a flag football team you create with your dorm friends. Currently I am involved in Student Government and get to see firsthand the many student groups that exist on campus and what they are trying to accomplish. Last year the Distinguished Speakers Board brought Bill Nye the Science Guy to campus, and let me just say it was packed! Any college you go to, there will always be those who party Wednesday night through Saturday night. I wouldn't say that CU parties anymore than any other school. There are plenty of other options for students other than partying. Boulder is probably one of the most amazing places to live for outdoor enthusiasts, and if that's not your calling, downtown Denver is 30 minutes away if your more of the shopping type. Colorado in general offers so many great activities from skiing, snowboarding, hiking, shopping etc..

Anything from sports to academics to social identity are a large part of campus life. I know people who are involved in many different activities such as intermurals, club sports, and civil rights groups. I am part of the Equestrian team, which is a club sport. I ride in the Hunter Jumper discipline but CU also has a western team. Athletic events such as Football and Basketball get chaotic at games from the amount of students who attend, but there is also a volleyball team, lacrosse team, hockey, baseball, ultimate frisbee, and any other sport you can think of! There are so many activities to do on campus such as laser shows at the planetarium, dance/theater performances, free movie screenings, lectures by well-known people in the community, and so much more. The school emails you through the Buff Bulletin to let students know what's going on on campus. Sororities and Fraternities encompass a small percentage of CU's population, but the people involved in them love what they're doing. They do a lot of volunteer work and make trustworthy friends. I meet many of my closest friends through the equestrian team and my dorm. I personally am not a party person, but The Hill is known as a place for many parties. You can also register your party with the police and try to save trouble by getting a warning before the cops shut down your party. Generally I feel safe on campus but always bring a friend with you at night! The Night Ride system and emergency call stations are great resources for students to use for safety measures. The bus system is very handy and accessible in Boulder. Many of my friends use the bus or walk to our activities. Pearl Street Mall and 29th Street Mall are popular hot spots to hang out if you don't like to drink and there's a movie theater. Another popular off-campus activity is hiking at Chataqua near the Flatirons and snowboarding/skiing. In the winter season, CU offers a bus system that only cost $15 and pays for a ride to the mountain from campus and back to campus. The ride includes one snack, comfortable seating, and a movie.
