University of Hawaii at Manoa Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at University of Hawaii at Manoa? Is this stereotype accurate?

Bianca

The stereotype for UH Manoa is that everyone will become a "Super Senior". This term refers to any student who is taking longer than 4 years to graduate. This stereotype is somewhat accurate due to budget cuts on staff and classes. However, I believe with passion, motivation, and determination, I will graduate within 4 years.

A lot of people probably think people here are surfers and go to the beach everyday, or they're Asian, or racist (towards white people). And yeah some people are idiots and go to the beach a lot. And most people are Asian. But I have yet to encounter someone actually being racist.

The most common stereotype of students at UH Manoa is that they are all lazy and don't have to do much work. The truth of the matter is that the school is competitive to get into along with it having high standards as any other public or private school. Also depending on your major (if it's a "specialized" major like business or engineering), those schools/departments require a lot to get into the program.

I think the stereotype of UH is probably that a lot of us are slackers and go surfing or to the beach all the time. The accuracy of this statement depends on what groups of people you look at. Because while there are students that will cut class to go to the beach on a good day, there are also many other students who diligently go to class and study hard.

I think the stereotype of students at my school is that they are too relaxed and not as worried about their college career as other students. I believe this is due to the island atmosphere and a sense of happiness and relaxation that pervades everything in Hawaii. I do not believe this is accurate however. I myself am a very serious student and I know many others who are. UH Manoa proves that you can excel at school and still enjoy yourself as well.

When I tell people that I go to school at the University of Hawai'i they automatically think that everyone is a stoner, surfer, or just an ignorant beach bum. Yes, there are people who attend UHM that are like that, but not all of us are! This college also doesn't have a large Greek life so that stereotype about college is untrue as well here.

Because we're located in Hawaii, people think we're all about surfing and relaxing in the sun. Of course, we do enjoy occasional days at the beach (some more than others) but most of us are here to get an education and secure a good future!

Because my school is in Hawaii, people automatically think that all we do is party and go to the beach to surf. That couldn't be far from the truth. True, we enjoy going to the beach, but we put our studies first. Sometimes we even study at the beach!

i think that a majority of students are seen by the public as high achievers at UH. honestly i think a majority of students don't feel like they meet this expectation because of how difficult it is to graduate in 4 years at UH, especially for nursing students. i also think students at UH are viewed as being very driven people which in a sense is very true because why else would we be going to a university if we weren't.
