University of Maryland-University College Top Questions

I only had one negative experience involving an academic advisor. I needed a class which wasn't offered for several semesters. Since I was in the military at the time, the school had signed an agreement that allows military students to transfer certain classes from other institutions without exception. I contacted UMUC to make sure that a class offered by another school would satisfy the requirement. The advisor confirmed it would, then after I completed the class she denied she had said this. I kept the e-mail traffic and appealed to the Maryland Board of Education successfully.

It was difficult to get in touch with staff and administrators. Since a lot of my classes were done online when I had an issue it was diffult to locate information of whom you should contact. It was also difficult to get to the campus due to distance and working full-time.

The majority of students at UMUC are enlisted in the military and/or are no longer active but hold civilian jobs. Therefore, when it came to class discussions, the participation was limited as so many of those students failed to think critically or provide answers that were not straight from the military code of ethics.

It's not a traditional school where young kids go to college. It's for adults who are working and getting their degree, so there isn't the same "school pride" you would find in other traditional schools.

The web base platform. Seems to be a little outdated, would be nice to see it compatiable with tablets and smartphones.

The worst thing, not just about my school, but any school, is the financial aspect. Going to school to get a better education is a great opportunity, but for myself and others it's very hard to pay for school. Being married and only having one income coming in while I focus on being a full time student to try and finish school faster in order to get a better job with my degree, doesn't make for an ideal financial situation.

The campus is a building, so it's not truly a campus.

In all honesty, I wouldn’t say UMUC has any real faults or I have any dislikes. Like most universities, they have their advantages and disadvantages. The one thing I would say that I don’t like is how papers don’t seem to be thoroughly critiqued. I found that some professors merely fill out a rubric stating how a student did great or their work needed improvement. No concrete feedback.

Again, it is the 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} accptance rate, and for the same reasons that I mentioned previously.

Sometimes support from administrators is lacking.

I attended UMUC part-time in the evening and I hated how dirty many of the women rest rooms were kept.

The worst thing about the school is the lack of interactions between students since all my classes are done on line. The interaction done is during enrolled classes, no community center for posting info and school open forum.

I do not consider there to be a worst thing to say about University of Maryland University College. I am very happy that I attend that school.

I took a class in fall 2010 semester that was supposed to be go with a lab but we didn't do the lab. As the matter of fact, everyone did the lab homework almost alone. The school should make sure that all students are taking classes in good condition because they paid for and for a good education.

The only downfall this school has is it takes a long time for them to complete paperwork. I am very satisfied with the class selection and the teachers. I am hoping that I recieve enough financial aid to attend this school full time while I work a full time job.
