Most people who go to Michigan are from Michigan. But the girl who lives next to me is from New Jersey, I work with a girl from Wisconsin, and a guy in my math group is from Korea. And that is only three people I've meet since coming here. Students have a tendency to group with other students who have similar backgrounds. Asians with Asians, middle class kids with middle class kids and so on. I don't really see that as a bad thing. Each group goes through different things, and it is important to have people who understand. Also this doesn't mean that you don't meet lots of different people and have the chance to be friends with them. Most students wear jeans and Tshirts to class. Some people dress nicer and wear skirts and button down shirts and so on. Lots of other people dress casually, and some people even wear sweats and pjs to class, although that is not as common. What drives me nuts is that tons of girls wear leggings with Ugg boots. I personally don't think leggings look good with nothing over them. They are not a substitute for pants!

Michigan has one of the most accepting student bodies you can find. I find a majority of students hail from Michigan but we do have members from every state and many foreign countries. The campus itself is more left-winged but there are right-winged people here to, it's not hard at all to find your own niche. You will see more North Face clothes, Ugg boots, and leggings on people here than you will ever have been used to seeing in your entire life. I find the majority of students come from privileged backgrounds, but not being from such a background won't exclude you, especially if you can find others who aren't pompous about their situations.

Lets see... The four tables of students in the dining hall: -Sorority Girls. Decked out in their Uggs and sunglasses, you can hear them talking about one of two things... last weekend or next weekend. -Atheletes. Decked out in their Michigan Apparel, they laugh and joke before they head off to practice; often texting on their way out the door. -General Student Body. Talking about how much work they have to do, the papers they have to write, and the exams they have coming up. Planning for the weekend. -Engineers. Bleary-eyed, studying at the table. Often a quiet bunch. Tend to be doing homework between bites. Stressed is a normal state of being.

Lauren

Diverse, and very interactive.

Michigan's political scene is quite liberal, so definately any student with conservative views could feel out of place here. But, he/she shouldn't. I myself am a Republican and I appreciate the oppertunity to see the other side of an issue. But I offer this to any student planning to come here: be very careful who you share your political views with because they just might want to get into a debate with you.

diverse

Michigan is very diverse and that diversity is celebrated. Of course you will find your radical here and there but as a whole Michigan students are politically aware and accepting.

Michigan used to have affirmative action, then people were raccist, now this campus is full of crackers and asians. We need more color, but whateva one day it'll go down.

Living on campus has opened up my views towards other races, cultures, and people of differing socioeconomic statuses. People at UofM are very diverse and everyone gets a long. I took a course called intergroup dialogue which helped students with different backgrounds learn about one another and come together. No student would feel out of place at Michigan.
