University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill accurate?

Jordan

I believe that all of the stereotypes are accurate, though the football team is improving.

Ryan

Somewhat. Compared to other schools in the area our student base is liberal, but we have students from all policial backgrounds at our school; however, most of the activism that is present on campus does deal with more liberal points of view. For the South, we do have a strong GLBTQ community. For some students this will come as a shock, but for most students it will be a fantastic learning experience, being around students who are different from those whom they went to high school wtih. And yes, for the most part UNC students are intelligent; however, there's always that kid in your lecture or recitation whose acceptance you question.

There is a good amount of students coming from wealthy backgrounds and families, but this stereotype is definitely unfair to be placed solely on UNC students. Being that you receive a liberal arts education here, UNC attracts a HUGE variety of people, and I'm proud to be a part of a university that is so diverse. All kinds of backgrounds are represented here, so it is just ignorant that people claim we're a stuck up school. If we're stuck up at all, it's because we're proud of being a part of this university, as we should be. Not all of the guys at Carolina are gay or lacking in masculinity, but compared to other schools I have on the campuses of, we tend to attract more frat-guy types. The girls at Carolina are INDEED the best-looking in the state ;-).

Like all stereotypes, there is some truth to it... but there is a good mix of students!

Just because UNC is a liberal arts college doesn't mean everyone is liberal. I have friends with all different political views and opinions. UNC students aren't conceited...we're just proud to be Tar Heels!
