What should every freshman at Virginia Wesleyan College know before they start?

There was a time in which I thought a career in nursing was about having a good job; however I realize now that it has more to do with loving all people and respecting human dignity than what a person does for a living. College is an amazing journey and can offer each person a different experience. There are a lot of things in life that you don't get a return on your investments-college isn't one of them! College has made me a better person...the world would be a different place if EVERYONE could go to college.

In my college experience, I have received two things. One, being the most important , is a quality education. The professors at Virginia Wesleyan are great and I have gotten close to many of them. The professors make learning enjoyable and I actually like attending class everyday. Professors are easy to communicate with and are always willing to offer help whenever needed. I am very thankful for the professors the college provides and the education that they give. They are a great value to me for they are preparing me well for the job field I want to be in and overall my future. By attending Virginia Wesleyan I have also been given the strength to become an independent individual. When you move onto campus, your parents are not around anymore to make sure you clean your room, wash your dishes, or do your homework. You have to grow up quickly at college and when you do that it helps you in the future. When you graduate, and go into the real world, attending Virginia Wesleyan will benefit the decisions you make, because they must be adult and realistic ones. I am very greatful for my experiences at college.

Not only have I made friends for life, but I have been surprised how much work I have actually accomplished. With all of the work required, my college has taught me about time management and really trying to do things to the best of my ability. I have taken advantage of many of the things my college has to offer to help me succeed such as the learning center and our library's 24 hour lounge. One of my favorite things about my college is the friendliness. Coming in as a freshman, I quickly made friends with not only people my age, but upperclassmen as well. Professors always offer one on one help if you are confused with something and are usually flexible with times. Even people like the cafe workers and janitors will always give you a friendly smile when you see them. Overall I am extremely happy that I chose Virginia Wesleyan College as my college choice and at this point I honestly could not see myself attending any other school.

My college experience has been very oriented around my studies and classes. I work two jobs so I do not get the chance to participate as much as I would like to in extra activities. My class and study time has been of much value to me because it has taught me numerous lessons that I can apply to the real working world. I have also been able to do research studies and won the honor to speak a conference this up coming Spring, which I would have never had the opportunity to do had it not been for a professor who encouraged me to submit my paper. Over all I have enjoyed every minute of my college experience and I feel much more prepared to enter life after college.

My college experience has been very hard. Not only has classes been extremely different than high school, but having no money to get what I need has been just as hard. I have found friends that I believe I will have forever in my life. That has been a plus to my college experience. I hope that i keep gaining friends in my two and a half years that i have left at Virginia Wesleyan College. Although, I have experience hardships such as taking out massive loans, and struggling to be able to still attend this college to be a student-athelete, I have gained value of it being a Liberal Arts college. I enjoy the cohesiveness of the students and the teachers. It is like a family, a home, also known to us as a community. I have gained friendships through this community and proffessors I can count on if I need anything at all. That is what I call a college experience.

In my first semester of college, I have experienced ten times more than I ever could have imagined. I was able to be a part of the college varsity volleyball program and traveled to many schools. Through this I was able to form bonds with friends who will last a lifetime. My friends at school are truly like a second family to me. While i do feel I could have made friends at other schools, I don't think the bond would have been as strong as I have found. The college truly promotes a community feel. I have the opportnuity to sit down to lunch with my professors, go to their offices just to chat and am recognized by my name in passing. This experience has made me feel valued and in turn is the most valuable aspect of my experience.

I have learned how diverse people are by making new types of friends that I never would have if I had not gone here. The social aspects of this college are great. I have also learned a lot of skills I will need in my career field after college. Not only that, but I have been able to meet real professions in my field that gave me valuable insight. The college has also helped me apply for jobs in the field and make me a more competitive applicant. I also have had many opportunities to do community service type work that I found I really like. I know that even after college I want to continue helping my community. I know that coming here has really changed me and my outlook on the world and only for the better.

You know how people say that distance makes the heart grown fonder? Well going to Virginia Wesleyan as taught me how to be tough in life, it taught me that not everything you hear or see is correct or right. But most importantly, it taught me to seek to find truth in everything. Going to Wesleyan has led everything to be tested in my life, my relationships, my finances, my faith, my education. It takes rain to see a rainbow or a bad day to understand a good day.

My college experience has been one of the best experiences of my life. It has been a true pleasure to learn new skills and fine tune forgotten or little used ones. I feel the experience has given me new confidence in myself, which will help me greatly when I return to the coporate world. It was a very hard decision to make-going back to school and being over fifty. But, it was the best choice I could have made. Not only has the college experience helped instill a new confidence in me, it has also helped me to plan my future. In these troubled times I feel it gives me an edge in a number of ways; in social settings, skill level, self esteem and confidence. The college experience and the joy of learning are fantastic and I will really miss it when I graduate.
