Wartburg College Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I would have learned the importance of working hard. It is hard to get into college with poor grades and a low GPA. It is especially difficult to stay in school when you do not qualify for academic scholarhips. Working diligently and putting your all into anything that you do pays off in the end. Although there are many sacrifices that comes with committing yourself to hard work, it is a very rewarding outcome when you can look back and there are no lost opportunities or regrets.

I wish I had known I wouldn't be able to play baseball here. A chance to play baseball was one of the deciding factors when I chose Wartburg, and no longer having that chance makes me wonder if things would have been different if I had chosen a different college. However, I do like the school, and I am not certain that things would have been any different at a different college.

I wish I knew more about the everyday life and the activities that go on during the year. I had no clue what to expect for everyday life and wish I did. I also didn't know about the activities that went on here.

I wish I had known how very small the town is, and the fact that there is no public transportation apart from cabs that must be called. I also wish I had known that the school generally pays only minimum wage and there aren't many places to work where you could get by with tips. I wish I had realized the extent of debt I would be getting into by attending this college as a citizen from a background of relative deprivation.

Before coming to college I wish that I would have known... I wish I would have known how easy it would be to make friends. I was scared that nobody would like me and I would be a loner. I wish I would have known that it was okay not to have a major picked out. There are people who are trained to help you figure it out. I wish I would have known how AWESOME this experience would be.

How important reading and writing actually are. I always thought of them as just basics but those basics will carry you a long way in school.
