Someone who does not want to be in an academically rigorous environment would not fit in at Wash U. Everyone here is very smart and works hard for what they have. That being said, it is not an academically competitive environment, so those who thrive on cuthroat competition should be aware that students here tend to help each other rather than try to compete to get to the top.

Wash U is one of the most intense, rigorous, and academically challenging schools in the country. But almost all of the students here love it that way. Furthermore, they truly want their peers to succeed - that's right, not competitive. There are study groups everywhere, whether formal or informal. Need help? Just ask somebody. We work hard, we play hard (everyone is involved in extracurriculars). It's the best type of life. If a person is competitive or is focused solely on academic work and is unconcerned with friends and extracurriculars, he or she might not enjoy WashU.

Michael

Someone who is looking to continue to coast by on natural talent should not consider Wash U. Washington University students work hard every day and every night to do as well as they do in classes and in the community. A Wash U student must be motivated to learn, to succeed, and to make a difference on campus and in the St. Louis neighborhood, while still enjoying himself or herself during his or her free time.

First and foremost, if a student does not feel well-prepared for a demanding college curriculum and workload, Wash U is not the school for him or her. Secondly, Wash U would not be a good fit for a student who feels more comfortable in a familiar, safe environment where everyone has a similar background and similar experiences. Finally, a student who wishes to commute from home or spend as little time on campus as possible would not feel very comfortable at Wash U, especially as a freshman, when the majority of activities take place on campus.
