What should every freshman at York Technical College know before they start?

Kayla

Definitely start out at York Tech. I would also tell myself not to be worried about financial aid as long as I keep appling to scholarships and opportunities, the money will come. I would also tell myself to look into becoming a teacher now, so I don't run into any wasted time when it comes to courses.

Knowing what I know now, I would tell myself to manage my time wisely. Time manage in college is very important and is something you really need to get use to. I would also tell myself that though the setting of college is more layed back, you still dont need to procrastinate on your assignments. The quicker you get your work done the easier and less stressful it is on you. Assignment deadlines come quicker than you think. With transitioning I would tell myself to become a little more social with other people. Getting to know and conversing with others can make the transition easier.

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would generously shake myself and stress the importance of earning a higher education degree at that time, to "strike while the iron is hot." I would also explain the formalities of financial aid and how I could achieve completion of school without the immediate funds, as I previously thought. I would also encourage myself to take on a full course load and dismiss distractions that arose in my life outside of school, as they would only be setbacks in my pursuits. I would also prepare myself for the difficulties surrounding college in terms of course load and intensity. Lastly, I would look at myself intently and emphatically reinforce all of the aforementioned items as they are the most important things to know. After all - I know "me" better than anyone else!

Dear Timothy, You don't know it, but I am what you will become in the future. I want to tell you about a few things that will better prepare you for college. First of all, you need to stop worrying so much about your future. You should be prepared for it, but do not stress out about it, things will fall into place and work out fine. There is no need to freak out about it now. Many things will happen to you as you make this transition, but if you keep a level head and a calm deminor you will get through them just fine. Another way you can prepare yourself is by taking more responsibility for your life. When you move into college many things will be placed on your shoulders. If you prepare for this by taking responsibility for the small things in your life now, you will have a much easier time transitioning into college life. One practical way you can do this is by being self motivated. There will not be teachers checking on you, so start pushing yourself now. Keep up the good work and follow my advice. I would tell myself that sports is not as important as schoolwork. You need to work hard to earn good grades and to focus more on the SAT. I would have told myself to research more schools and to research scholarships and apply for them. Being prepared for the academics in college is not something that you can just walk into and not study.

If I could go back in time to when I was a senior in high school and give myself advice based on what I know now, my first piece of advice would be to always think for yourself. At that time in my life my peers had a major influence on what I did. I feel like I should of taken the time to figure out more of who and what I wanted to be in future and made my school and career decisions based on me and my preferences. I would not give two seconds to any adult that wanted to offer me advice; therefore I would also advice myself to listen to the adults in my life because in the long run they truely do care and want to help you make the choices to mold a better future for yourself. As a high school senior it is important you take time to look at yourself and decide what you want for your future and go with it. Do not stick with the crowd be yourself and make it count!

Amanda

I would tell myself to save all the money I could. It is very hard to work while in college.

You are a high school senior, even though high school has ended, your life of opportunity is just beginning. The best advise I can give you is to go to college in the Fall and do your very best. College is the key to success, because without education, you stand a chance of missing out on a very important part of life...SUCCESS!!

I am a 44 year old single mother with two boys in college as well as attending college myself to achieve a degree in engineering graphics and mechanical design. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself the same thing I tell my children now. Go straight to college after graduation. I would then make sure I understood that staying in school long enough to get a master degree was essential to getting a job that paid a salary that would provide enough money for my family to live without struggling from pay check to pay check. I would also encourage myself to look for jobs that allow employees to attend continued edcation classes as part of the there annual training program. This would allow me to continue to keep up with changes in the industry in the area of my career. Education is the foundation of how well one can function in society and survive.
