In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a full-time student.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must major in mathematics, medical sciences, physical science, technology, science, engineering, or natural resources.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be an enrolled member of an American Indian tribe, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or otherwise considered to be an American Indian by the tribe with which affiliation is claimed; or be at least 1/4 American Indian blood; or be at least 1/4 Alaskan Native; or be considered to be an Alaskan Native by an Alaskan Native group to which affiliation is claimed.
  7. Must be enrolled at an accredited four-year college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student, or be enrolled in a two-year college program leading to an academic degree.

Description: This scholarship is open to American Indian/Alaska Native students who are pursuing degrees in mathematics, medical sciences, physical science, technology, science, engineering, or natural resources. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and must be a current AISES member (or join AISES before applying).

Additional Information: Please note: Students must be members of AISES to apply. Students may apply for membership prior to applying for the scholarship. Membership information is available online at www.aises.org/membership. College student membership is $25. Complete applications are reviewed by a minimum of three qualified reviewers who score each application based upon factors such as academic performance (grade point average and academic record), the student's personal essay (demonstrates character, commitment, goals), strength of recommendation letters, and other activities the student has undertaken including jobs, volunteer efforts, internships, extracurricular activities, hobbies, etc. Scored applications and reviewer comments are then used by AISES staff and some funders to select scholarship recipients. Students cannot have more than one AISES academic scholarship in any one year.

Award Amount: $1,000 for undergraduates, and $2,000 for graduate students. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. Students may reapply in subsequent years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) website. The student must register an account to access the online application, and must complete the application entirely online. No paper applications are accepted. As part of a complete application, the student must submit the following documentation: proof of American Indian or Alaskan Native ancestry/membership, which includes verification by the official tribal/village/community governing body (either a signed letter from the governing entity or a governmental ID card) indicating enrollment status, or a federally issued Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or Certificate of Degree of Alaska Native Blood; a personal statement of no more than 1,000 words addressing his/her educational and/or career goals, interest in and motivation to continue higher education, an understanding of the importance of college and his/her commitment to complete the educational program undertaken, and his/her plan or desire to make a difference in or impact his/her community; and a resume (must also be uploaded into the AISES Online Resume Database).The student must also request that his/her official transcripts be sent by his/her postsecondary institution's registrar's office directly to AISES.Complete applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. MDT on the deadline date.
