What is Academic Progress Rate? By Stewart Brown
When beginning your college search your first priority should be academics. The NCAA evaluates programs yearly and gives them a maximum score of 1000 in what has become known as the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
APR is now five years old and measures an athletic programs ability to progress its student-athletes towards graduation. Each program is given a score based on eligibility and retention of student athletes and programs that score lower than 925 (based on the 1000 point scale) are deemed as failing and could have scholarships taken from them until their academic issues are corrected. Since these measures have been in place there as been great improvement in the low scoring sports and programs which has seen the APR as a success among colleges and universities.
How does this impact you? Well, it would be one of the first items of research I would recommend when you are looking at a college program. After all, you are at college to attain a bachelor’s degree, which will stand you in good stead for the remainder of your life. Being in a program that has a strong and positive emphasis in graduation and retainment of student-athletes will only help you graduate and develop a strong career post-college.
On June 9, 2010 the NCAA published the scores from this years report. You may take a look at the report and scores of colleges that interest you.
