Every New Year always seems to start the same; people create a list of resolutions to help better their lives, but somehow seem to go off-track by Valentine’s Day. This year, why not make a resolution you can keep? Commit to reducing your student loan debt or college expenses by applying for scholarships! A mere hour or two each month could result in thousands of dollars in savings for you this year. To help you get started, I’ve created this list of ten awards that all expire in January 2013.
1. Youth Activist Scholarship
Utah high school seniors, who are active in promoting civil liberties, are eligible to apply. A total of three $1,000 scholarships will be provided. Deadline: January 7, 2013.
2. Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship
This essay scholarship is open to California high school seniors. Student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. One $10,000 scholarship will be awarded. Deadline: January 8, 2013.
3. Ron Brown Scholarship
African American high school seniors may apply. Students should exhibit leadership skills, participate in community service, and demonstrate financial need. Twenty renewable $10,000 scholarships will be offered. Deadline: January 9, 2013.
4. Army ROTC Scholarship
Students between the ages of 17 and 26, who have a high school diploma, are eligible to apply. Approximately 1,000 four-year awards will be available. Deadline: January 10, 2013.
5. Create-a-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest
This creative contest is open to U.S. students, who are 14 years or older. One $10,000 scholarship will be awarded. Deadline: January 14, 2013.
6. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship
This award is available to U.S. students who have multiple sclerosis or have a parent with multiple sclerosis. Applicants must be a high school senior, or high school graduate, planning to enroll in college for the first time. Approximately 470 scholarships (valued between $1,000 and $3,000) will be offered. Deadline: January 14, 2013.
7. Star-Spangled Scholarship™ Program
This essay contest is open to U.S. high school and college students. Scholarships are valued between $1,000 and $3,000. The number of awards offered is subject to available funding. Deadline: January 15, 2013.
8. Scholarship Art & Writing Award
This art competition is open to U.S. and Canadian students. Students must be in grades 7 through 12. Thirty Distinguished Achievement Awards will be offered. Fifteen scholarships valued at $10,000 will also be awarded. Deadline: January 15, 2013.
9. SuperSibs! Scholarship
U.S. high school seniors, who have a sibling who has battled or is currently battling cancer, may apply. Fifteen $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Deadline: January 25, 2013.
10. Rainbow City Band Scholarship
This music scholarship is open to any student, younger than 25, who resides in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon or Washington. Preference is given to those students who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. One scholarship, valued up to $10,000, will be provided. Deadline: January 31, 2013.
11. I Have a Dream Scholarship
Share your funny, weird or inspirational dream for a chance to win $1,000 for college. Any U.S. student, 13 years or older, may apply. Deadline: January 31, 2013.
