College of Charleston Top Questions

What are the academics like at College of Charleston?

Allison

Some of my professors know my name. I've had some of them more than once now, and some of my classes are pretty small. I am currently in 4 classes this semester, and with the exception of one lower level accounting class which is in a lecture hall, my class size is around 30 max.

I love the class size and how each professor knows your name. I think that science classes are harder to get to know the professor unless you make an effort to get to know your professor. I love the variety of classes available and how COFC is a liberal arts school. The science department here is very difficult but if you study enough, you will do fine.

Cofc just got credited with Ivy League status academic wise, but does not have the money to completely become an Ivy League school. The Academics are great and very diverse. This is a great school for science, hospitality and business, and education.

I am in the Honors College so two out of my six courses this semester are with other Honors students; these classes are a little more difficult and a bit more personal. However, in all of my classes, the teacher knows my name. I have not taken lecture classes yet, however. The professors are very knowledgeable and passionate in their fields. They like to teach and this makes the subject matter more interesting. I really like the teachers here. One thing that bugs me in some of my classes is that students don't ask all that many questions. This was a surprise to me coming from a liberal high school right outside of Boston, Massachusetts. I have not spent much time with professors outside of class, but I have gone to a couple of my professors' office hours to seek help. They always offer opportunities to talk about anything a student is concerned about. Students definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class, but once again, I am in the Honors College so I have an experience that's a bit different.

the library is very popular! i really like a lot of my professors. class size tends to be fairly small. we are a competitive school academically.

Kristen

most professors know the names of their students. favorite class= health class. least favorite=history. Students study most nights of the week. There is always class participation. Most unique class=theatre. My major is Physical Education, Health Promotions. I dont spend time with my prof.outside of class. All my health classes help with future careers and areas of interest.

Abby

Most professors will know your name if you talk to them at least once one on one. My favorite classes are those with the human body such as anatomy/physiology. Students are competitive, but its an unconscious race. I feel like the academic requirements are too low for CofC. They need to be raised to justify the high academic teachings it offers.

Megan

Professors know my name and remember it semesters afterwards. I feel like students really do study a lot, even though of the party school stereotype. I really feel like the school does a lot for helping students get internships and jobs.

Katie

For the most part professors know you name, but there's the occasional really large lecture class where they don't know ANYONE. Class participation is always encouraged; the professors like to hear what you have to say.

Rachel

Certain professors and departments are better than others. Communication and Business have a lot of great professors who have a lot of real world experience it just may take a little investigation and experience to figure who fits your learning style the best. Getting the basic introductory classes out of the way fast is the best way to open yourself up to the more specific classes.
