Is the stereotype of students at Connecticut College accurate?

Alicia

Of course, stereotypes exist for a reason, but I find that there is more to Conn than the preppy stereotype.

Jillian

It seems as if 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the freshman class is from the Northeast, and many of them go home on weekends. It almost feels like a "commuter school" although everyone lives on campus during the week.

Andrew

The superficial stereotypes are accurate, I would say, about 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time.

Nicholas

Sadly, for the most part, I'd say yes.

Emily

While there are definitely a fair share of kids who spend their summers sailing on the Cape and have enough money to pay for their coke-addiction (it´s to be expected, the tuition is offthewall expensive), there is definitely more diversity at Conn than people think. The campus is comprised of students of different races and ethnicities; there is a significant international presence and Conn has been making an effort to increase diversity on campus. Diversity, however, to me, also means diversity of interests. There are students into sports, art, theatre, music, politics --everything. Though the campus may seem a little homogenous from the outside, everyone can find his niche.

Julia

Contrary to high school rules, not every preppy person is a jock. Lacrosse is not the coolest sport- all sports here consider themselves special because there's no football team.

Kelly

no, there are a lot of groups of people and you can find anyone you are looking for despite the small size of the school. We are also full of extremely smart students who care about their academics a lot more than I ever imagined and graduated with honors and top of their classes from high school.

kyle

yes

Now, a lot of the kids are privileged and might wear polo shirts but you'll find this at any NESCAC school. When people hear the term "preppy" they often equate that with snobbishness but at Connecticut College the kids are super down to earth.

Jamie

What most kids say about Conn kids is that they are a bunch of rich kids who did fairly well in school but didn't get into an ivy. That being said, the majority of students here come from private schools, and Conn probably wasn't at the top of their list for colleges. However, I've met a lot of people that have come to terms with that, and as a result student life is more relaxed and less competitive than it is at more "elite" schools. I'll also be happy to assure prospys that while you are not going to like everyone (I find superpreps sort of annoying) you are going to make some of the best friends of your life here, and you're not going to find it hard to float between different social groups. I hang out with preps-jocks-stoners-rockers-straightedge-fucking weirdos. The kids all have brains, are friendly, and lack the programmable robotic quality that gives me the heebey jeebies.

Brett

There are certainly people that sport their poppd colars, but there is a diversity in the student body that is important, entertaining, and lends to a diverse group of oppinions within the colleges population.

Emma

To a certain extent. I think that Conn has really alternative people, and they also have very preppy people but they also have everyone else in between. There really is no overwhelming dominant stereotypical group. Everyone finds their niche and the entire campus is interwoven socially.

Cameron

As a passive observer for the last four years, this portrait is incredibly accurate for 60-70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population. The remaining 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} constitute an eclectic variation of international students, minorities, a few hippies and environment fanatics, a handful of quirky science kids and academia obsessed individuals. If you're looking for a diverse and interesting campus, please look beyond Connecticut College for your social life.

Marissa

I have to say that both are somewhat accurate. Some of the students are indeed very preppy, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are many different kinds of people at Conn: preppy, metal, etc. But we, as a student body, tend to look past the labels. It is also true that some of the students are quite sheltered and spoiled, but they make up the minority. The stereotype that Conn students are friendly and welcome is true. That was my favorite part of Conn, everyone was so nice and ready to give anyone a chance. There were very few snap judgments.

Watts

Yes. I would say this depictions is accurate for about 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the school. In other words you are almost guaranteed to have a few of these characters in or around your circle of friends. Just because they are rich and dress like Tom Brady (which for the record is rather effeminate) doesn't mean they can't be fun. Hell, my rich friends tend to fund my fun so they can't be all that bad.

Kelsey

Preppy and rich - yes. I don't think we have quite as much of a drinking culture as some other similar schools though.

Ryan

To an extent, but there are a lot of interesting people

Maegan

Connecticut College does have many "preppy" students. However, there many other groups on campus.

Eli

It depends how you look at it. Many small liberal arts colleges in the Northeast share these stereotypes, but the word "stereotype" has a negative connotation. There are plenty of ethnicities and cultures represented at Conn, but a large percentage of students are rich and white (preppy is less common). This is not a bad thing for many people (although it is often described that way), because rich, white kids want to be around other rich white kids. So yes, these stereotypes are accurate (with more than enought exceptions), but anyone seriously considering Conn probably wouldn't mind a homogenous population.

Rachel

Not a hundred percent there are some preps and hippies just as their is at every school but the majority of the students are intelluctually brilliant and do not do drugs.
