FIT students do not tend to be very politically active, and the school doesn't make many efforts to encourage students to get involved socially. However, anyone should feel comfortable in his/her own skin at FIT due to great encouragement of personal style. FIT is a melting pot of mixed races, origins, sexual orientations, and religious beliefs. Individuality is important throughout the student body, though creativity becomes a bit stifled in the classroom. FIT leaves socializing and individual progress almost entirely up to the individual--you will be forced out of your comfort zone a bit in order to be happy and make a good, diverse group of friends.

Incredibly diverse campus in every way. Every "color of the rainbow" is here. Most people hail from Long Island, Westchester, upstate cities, New Jersey, etc. Lots of commuters, at least in my major. Brooklyn, Queens, etc. 99{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the guys are gay. Funny enough, though, I don't think I've ever had a single class with anyone gay. Everyone is aware/accepting of all kinds of people. If people dress poorly, though, then that is the only reason someone would ever judge you.
Away from the plaid shirts and skateboards of D Building (Art & Design), you'll find that most girls wake up at the crack of dawn to put on a full face of makeup (who are they trying to impress again?) At 8:30 in the cafeteria, you will hear the clicking of Jeffrey Campbell heels as an army of top-knotted girls fluff their fur vests in anticipation of their morning Venti Soy Latte.
4 different types of cafeteria tables? 1. Shy Koreans (with yesstyle.com wardrobes and timid giggles) 2. Weird illustration kids (never left the Jack Skeleton beanie in high school) 3. Fashion girls (handbags piled on the table as they nibble at their salads) 4. Hipsters (there's such a broad range here; basically anyone trying to be Tumblr famous)

This school is very liberal and open minded. We have a lot of LGBT students. I don't think anyone would feel out of place in this school. We have all types of students, with all different background, and personal stories.
The only tiny downfall is that sometimes the work load is so intense and everyone is so consumed with their projects that it may seem that students are in their own world and do not really socialize as much as other schools may.

I belive that any free time you have in school use it to work hard and research your work. FIT is a great school but some students don't use their time wisely and fail in their semester. There are many resources that can help but you have to do some research on your own. The professors are helpful and they want you to excel in whatever you plan on doing with your career. The students you interact with will be your co workers so build relationships with every one, FIT is the ultimate networking source .

My classmates in the evening weekend program are a mix of high school graduates with little to no drive and committed older students who are either first timers or returning to school.
