The thing I hated about high school was that I didn't feel like I was learning towards anything. My classes here make me feel like I'm learning to be a better person IN MY CAREER when I leave. I've had some awesomely small classes and the professors always manage to learn your name within a week or two. They're also required to have office hours so you can go and get a paper looked at, just chat about class topics, or eventually solicit recommendations. Being a liberal arts school there's a solid amount of core education, but with soooooooo many options for classes it's never boring. I HATE science, so for a science requirement I took Biology in Society, which related to current social and medical events. A million times more relative to what I was really interested in.

I really enjoy the small class size and the numerous opportunities for internships.

Most professors know their students by name, which is nice. Students I know have intellectual discussions outside of class, but most of my friends are in Honors College, like me.
Chris
I have had some brilliant professors, and some i wonder why they were heading the class and not a baboon. The academic environment is not very competitive. I am a b.s. music merchandising major, and was accepted into the program without a formal audition. Furthermore, i feel the academic curriculum to be very weak and unorganized. Most conversations i overhear are of weekend endeavors to bars.

Class sizes are freakin sweet. It feels like high school still. All my teachers know who I am, and I'm pretty comfortable with them. The curriculum is difficult, but not unreasonable (in most cases). What I learn in class definitely percolates into everyday life. I do have discussions with other students outside of class. I'm pretty satisfied so far with the academics.

people don't participate much in class, especially early ones. that's why i like honors seminars, because students actually want to be in class (most of the time) and are trying to have educated conversations
Melissa
My favorite classes are painting classes. Most teachers know our names. Honors classes are stimulating and competative, outside the honors community you have to work to find your niche. the political science department is great- really interesting personalities, very supportive and welcoming, if you put yourself out there to get to know them.

the class sizes are really nice, they're not huge and not too small at the same time. profs are also really good with responding to emails and being present during office hours. the career center here is also really helpful in resume writing, internship and job obtaining.

The Dance Department is really amazing at Hofstra University. It's got about 80 students so that's pretty large. Since it has so many students it can afford to bring in really big name artists and teachers. This also creates a great sense of community and a really creative environment.
Ryan
The faculty is extremely overqualified for the students. In other words, the professors are wonderful, and it's unfortunate that they do not have equally as enthusiastic students. Especially in the arts, most of the professors practice in Manhattan but teach at Hofstra. Profs are also incredibly reliable at returning emails and making you feel important and like not another face in the crowd.

Classes are pretty small and participation heavy. Teachers know you. Classes help to get you ready for a job but also are good learning experiences. Requirements aren't ridiculous.
Sarah
I love all my professors, especially all those in connection with the dance department. All the classes i've had are relatively small (30 or less) and the teachers learn your names, as long as you come on a relatively frequent basis. My professors have been great at assisting me both with class and other issues.
Shawn
Good class sizes and friendly teachers. Requirements not too hard but challenging.
Mike
Many professors are great, others aren't so good. I feel like that is commonplace of any college. I have learned some incredible stuff in the three years I've been here, and I will remember everything I've learned and will apply it towards the rest of my life.
Jacob
Its all over the map...some teachers are good and hard...some are irrational... some are easy...some students arent college level students, some students are really intelligent... it has a wide range....
Alex
The classes are pretty small, about 25 students a class. The proffesors tend to learn you and because the classes are small, they are often discussion classes. The ideas often travel outside of class too. The school is competitive with a certain group. Like all colleges though, there are those who really really care and those who don't at all, with most right in the middle. The Communications department is pretty good, offering a lot of classes and good advisement. The requirements are not unreasonable but challenging, offering all you need to know for the fields while offering enough time just for learning.
Simon
the academics are very good. i am in te biochemistry department and i believe the subjects required for the degree are very related to the field and taught by very knowledgeable professors.
Devin
I like the academics here. The professors are all very helpful and personal with students. Class participation is really common in some classes but others are merely lecture and take notes.
Matt
I love the academics here, well mostly. I am forced to take classes that I don't really care about and that takes away from time other classes that I would like to take. All of my proffessors, well at least the ones in my major know my name and keep up with my personal life to a degree, it is nice.
