What are the academics like at Iowa State University?

Sarah

At first, the classes may be too large, but as you get further in your major you get to know everyone (classmates and professors) on a more personal level.

Charlie

My favorite class here at Iowa State so far has to be my HS 110 class. It is a health class and because I like health and am going into that field, I really like it. My least favorite class that I have taken was TC 165, thats all I'm going to say. Here at Iowa State class participation in small classes is something that happens regularly. I feel that the requirements here for academics are pretty sustainable.

A lot of my professors know my name and know me on a personal level. My favorite class has been medical microbiology because it is so useful in everyday situations and interesting. My professor was AWESOME...Dr. Cunnick! Class participation is very common because my classes have pretty much the same people in them and we know each other quite well. Students are VERY competitive, def. if you are Greek :) I am only one of a few girl in the Genetics department and I am totally OK with that.

Andy

Most my professors in small lectures know my name- not so much if I am in a larger lecture. I think the majority if ISU students study a lot. I think there needs to be more for students who aren't in an AG or engineering program.

Allard

I think that students at iowa state are VERY competititive. I was a design major for awhile and the competition to get into programs is ridiculous.

Morgan

I am extremely impressed with the Speech Communication program. They have great faculty that truly care about the education of young people and continue each year to seek training to become more effective teachers. I was upset to hear the the University is planning to take away the office space that so clearly this staff deserves.

Jody

I liked the idea that we got to spend so much time in classrooms (education major)

Trista

Our school is too big to have professors talk to us one on one during class, so in order to get to know a professor, you must have to make the effort to do it on your own.

Lindsay

Teachers in large lectures rarely taught me anything. Smaller lectures are the only classes that I can actually say I learned something in.

When people thing of state schools, they think that the classes are easy. Iowa State, in my eyes, has a hard curriculum. If you choose to major in the design school at Iowa State you have to take required classes your first year and then apply to get into your major of choice. It is very competitive.

Ani

my favorite class was my psych 280 class. I think this is a very talented and competitive student body, in some majors more than others.

Jessica

I am in a lot of large lectures this semester so not really any professors know my name. My faveorite class as of right now is Psych 280. It is interesting and it can be related back to how we live our lives. I feel that Iowa States academic requirements are perfect. I would not change them. It allows students to branch out and learn about other things besides their major.

Alex

My favorite classes at Iowa State have been Finance 301 with Porter and LSCM with Martens. I really enjoy all the quantitative courses I've taken here at ISU such as Accounting 284 and 285, Business Calc, and especially Finance. I am currently in LSCM 360 and its definitely my second favorite class after Porter's.

Academics are hard at Iowa State, but they are worth when you leave and have discovered just as much about you as you have about your major and have Iowa State on your resume! Students are always encouraged to participate in class, and especially in my department, Microbiology Pre-Med, students are encouraged to learn through hands on techniques. Teacher/ student relations can differ from class to class and major to major, but eating dinner with your professor is not unheard of. I just went out to a professors house this past weekend for a club event.

Alex

A lot of my professors know my name, which is really nice because you know that they care. My favorite class was Psychology 101, it was really interesting!

Lauren

some majors definitely require a lot more study hours than others (design majors are knee deep in projectss all night long). i feel like i should be doing a lot more work, but im still pulling off grades. i like big lectures better than small classrooms, but its good to have a combination of both.

Jesse

I have quite a few large lecture where the professor couldn't possibly learn everyones names but if you go up to the after class or to their office hours, they remember your face at least and most of the time your name. I probably don't study as much as I should but I get by. I spend a lot of my study time at the library. I think ISU students are VERY competative. If you need proof, watch a Greek Week tournament. During my lectures students speak up with questions and comments.

Alex

My classes are all Studio Art classes and I like them all a lot. I think they do their best to try to fufill the curriculum

Ash

I graduated from the college of education. I feel I was given the tools needed to succeed in the workplace. Elementary education core classes were relatively small. Professors did know our names. I had three professors that I was particulary fond of. They would say "Hi, Shari" or ask me how I was doing if they saw me roaming the halls of Largomarcino. In addition I also felt I could go to them if I needed additional clarification or help on an assignment. They were friendly, down-to-earth, supportive, and encouraging educators. Just the kind of personalities needed to teach future teachers. Another opportunity afforded to me was student teaching in New Zealand. It was a great experience traveling to another country, and getting credit for it. I'm sure Iowa State still offers many overseas experiences. I would definately encourage others to explore these education opportunities. I enjoyed most of my education classes. The classes I liked the least were the large lectures. It was easy to become distracted in class. I got more out of watching others nod off, then out of the lectures. I also learned that I could skip a majority of the classes, study the study guide and just show up for tests. I was able to pass these classes with a C. I do regret that now however. If I could go back and do that over I would attend class. It would have been an easy A.

I think that academics at Iowa state are pretty decent. The teachers seem to be passionate about what they do. Sometimes the teachers know us personally, but thats hard to do in the big lectures. The academic policy at Iowa State is well written, in my opinion, and teachers usually try to live up to that standard.
