Describe the students at Kaplan University-Hagerstown Campus.

Alicia

Attending Kaplan University's online campus is a great way to meet new people. There is no such thing as the "typical student" at Kaplan. There are students from all over the nation. I was afraid that taking 3 years off after high school would make me the oldest in my class who procrastinated and didn't do the "right thing", which is attending college right out of high school. I was proven wrong. There were students younger than me, yes, but there were also students all the way up into their 60's. I was shown that you're not a "loser" just because your life lead you somewhere else after high school. All that is important is that you have chosen to further yourself in your career and in your life by attending college. The students are supportive, friendly, and helpful. As Secretary of the KU Ambassadors and Leaders Group I have learned just how great the students at Kaplan are. People are always helping each other; in the classrooms, seminars, with homework, etc. I've also made many friends that I hope will be life-long. It is just a wonderful thing to know that you are surrounded by people going through the exact same challenges as you and who are ready to help when they can.

My school accept students from different background, race, color socioeconomic status. As long as a student come to learn and abide by the rule of excellence, all will be great.

Students mostly interact in professional manners. It is rare that a student attacks or discriminates against other students as there is zero-tolerance for this type of action. Discussion boards are open to all opinions and if topics go into that semi-red area where students may be offended, the professors remind everyone that there is no wrong or right answer to a question on opinion, and to respect each other's ideas. For me, I enjoy learning how other's feel about different situations and consider how their ideas are accurate.

I do not think there is any student that would feel they are out of place at this school. Being an online school, the diversity is quite large. You get people that are from various backgrounds. The great thing about online schooling is you can attend seminar in your pajamas if you wanted. There is no dining hall to worry about, most classmate interactions are during discussion boards and seminars. The students have been very nice and very helpful.

The majority of students at Kaplan are female. They are primarily made up of stay at home mothers. I often am in classes where I'm the only male there, which can be very strange and make one feel like they're walking on egg shells. There are also a good bit of "bible thumpers" going to this school. You will occasionally run into the God fanatic that will make your learning experience miserable. There are also some students from out of country. There is also a lack of spelling ability with a good part of the students I've had the pleasure of being with in classes (as well as bad grammar). Everyone isn't perfect, but they do make spell checkers and grammar checkers for this. You do have the potential of meeting new "friends" with Kaplan, but since this isn't a traditional campus, your only outlets are social sites or if they trust you enough over the phone conversations.

Students at Kaplan come from all walks of life from young to older, single and married. Not everyone is always going to mesh with everyone else but, there seems to be something here going a long way toward mutual respect. We're all here for one reason. To get that degree and go out into the world and make our mark. Having that one goal seems to bring everyone to the same cross roads. As a whole, life here is good.

Students at Kaplan come from all over the world. In the online environment students are able to work, raise families and travel, as long as they remember to pack their laptops. Kaplan even has a vast group of people that are currently serving in our military.
