Meredith College Top Questions

What should every freshman at Meredith College know before they start?

Shelley

Every school is different and every student is different. The most important factor to success in college is making sure that the school fits the student. Every parent would love to think that their child will excel anywhere but that is simply not true. The students and parents need to honestly assess the choices without the threat of reproach or disappointment. For example, a student who needs more attention and help with school work should consider a smaller college so that the help will be avaliable. However, if a student will not commit to hours of homework then a larger school may be better since professors will not be able to handle as many assignments due to the much larger class sizes. In addition, when a student accepts a college because of pressure from parents or others, that student tends to not dedicate themselves because he/she does not view the experience as a personal accomplishment but as an appeasement for someone else.

Spend the night at the school in a dorm and go to class for a day to see how you fit into the school

Make sure you are comfortable with the size of the campus. You don't really think about it beforehand, but when you are stressed from schoolwork and studying, the last thing you need is to have to run to classes to make it on time and then get lost! And the bigger the campus, the harder it is to get one on one time with professors and faculty, not to mention other students. Always talk to students at the school beforehand and ask their true opinion of the school. Make sure the college offers the activities and majors you would be interested in.
