Stony Brook University Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at Stony Brook University?

Stephanie

In regards to the whole school its seen as a majority Asian, which does in fact make kids feel like they need to be really smart. It also gives people the impression that there aren't a lot of parties because its a science school. The students themselves are only stereo-typical based on which Quad you live in. For example, people commonly believe that students who live in Tabler use a lot of drugs because we're the Arts Quad.

Jenny

The only real stereotype I've heard was that Stony students are all stoners. That since there's nothing around, everyone gets bored and does drugs.

Lee

asian invasion, "stoner brook", some of the smartest students in the Northeast.

KJ

People believe that most of the students that go to this school are rich. They also believe that Stonybrook is an expensive school and not worth it. Some others believe that in the area outside of Stonybrook, there is nothing to do.

Cody

People think everyone is from Long Island.

Danny

We tend to be a little quite on weekends.

KC

everyone is studious and doesnt have a social life

Ashley

I have heard a lot of students complaining about campus services/activity/policies etc.

Andy

The large number of commuter students contributes to a lack of close-knit campus community. In addition, the largest percentage of students on campus is comprised of international Asian students (their aloofness and un-acculturated nature contributing yet again to a lack of campus community). Thirdly, there is a feeble social scene and few, if any, weekend activities - making life for those of us living on campus slow-moving, at best.

Vanessa

There isn't really a typical Stony Brook student. There's a lot of diversity - in ethnicity, intelligence, and work ethic.

Adrienne

Stony Brook students are usually considered very smart, and very studious. I'm always proud to brag about what school I go to because I love to see people's reaction. It never gets old when people say 'that's a really good school'. But they also think it's a minority school, and always make jokes about it.

Ellen

They're all foreign.

Ryan

It's full of Asians! You can't walk around the campus for 20 seconds without running into one. Weekends are absolutely dead. Can get depressing at times. The campus looked like a prison, parts of it still does, but has greatly improved the past 3 years. Academically, it is reaching beyond and has a fast progressing. It's a good experience overall.

Vincent

Professors are there just for research and could care less about the students. The campus is no fun for students, no parties. All foreigners.

Nelle

Stereotypes consist mostly about the overwhelmingly large Asian student population. The Asian community can make someone who doesn't speak an Asian language feel like they are living on another continent. Stereotypically only non-English speaking people stay on campus over the weekends.

Anne

A ton of asians, teachers you can't understand, and huge classes.

Jesse

They're all Asian.

Jacquelyn

That as a white person I would be the minority. That Stony Brook was Asian centeral.

Alex

I DON'T HAVE ANY. BEING A MATURE A/K/A OVER 30 YEAR OLD STUDENT, I THINK THAT EVERYONE AT STONYBROOK, INCLUDING PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS, ARE THE MOST OPEN MINDED, COURTEOUS AND CARING PEOPLE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. I LOVE STONY BROOK, THE STUDENTS AND STAFF, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE LEARNING. IF THERE IS A HEAVEN AFTER EARTH, I IMAGINE IT AS STONYBROOK.

sean

its boring and the students are dorks
