What should every freshman at SUNY at Albany know before they start?

In all honesty I think that I may have stumbled the most this year than I would have in any other school year. I have made some bad decision that could have permanently messed up all that I have strived for in the past. It goes without saying that the trasition from high school to college was rather difficult for me, if not unexpected. However the two things that I have learned from all of this, despite all of the classes and all of the hype from being a college student, is that you must never lose sight of what you are striving for and that it is okay to ask for help if and when you get lost. For a Drive without a Dream is like a Track without a Train. For although you may have ideas of where you want to be, it'll take that Loco-Motive to truly get you there, and don't forget that every train has a conductor.

Going away to college has been a great experience for me. It has allowed me to become independent and I now feel like I am ready to face the world on my own away from home. My college also led me to the greatest experience of my life which was interning at a concert venue for an entire summer. Had I not attended this school I would never have had this amazing opportunity. For this I am very grateful to my school.

Although it is only my second year, I believe I gained some knowledge of how the real world works. There is nothing that comes easy or that is handed to you. Whether it’s getting a good grade or looking for a job, you have to work (and work hard) to obtain it. You have to take it upon your make sure you succeed and not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help when it is needed. I also gained the knowledge of many different cultures and beliefs’. In a school this big, you quickly realize that not everyone is like you and what you see as funny may offend others. Educating yourself on different beliefs and cultures really helps you avoid such sticky situations. It is important that I attend college and finish college so that I may prove all those who said “I could not do it” wrong. So that all the people who looked down on me can see that not only did I succeed, but I’m doing something that not only helps other people, but that I love. I look forward to seeing what my next few years in college holds.

At first, I thought Albany just was a party school for students who weren't serious about their college career. But after the first semester, I realized I was completely wrong. I found plenty of smart people at this university, and met many dedicated teachers that take pleasure in making sure their students learn their respective material. I thought that living away from home would be burdensome, but I came to the conclusion that I should be thankful for being a resident at the UAlbany campus. Living with one's parents isn't bad, but being away from them for a while can certainly be a rewarding experience since it has introduced me to the perspective real world, and served as a training ground for my personal development in an uniquely and independent manner. I confess that living in the UAlbany campus has greatly improved my people's skills, as now I am less shy, and also my ability to fend for myself. Hence, I confidently conclude that "maturity" has been the most valuable trait I have gained at UAlbany.

I have gotten alot of college and it has been very valuable to attend. I have gained content knowledge as well as the skills of working as part of a team. I have learned to survive and excel in a huge college environment where my parents are not around to try to motivate me. I have learned how to live on my own and survive.

I just started so I don't have much to offer. I realize that I am more prepared in many ways than others. I grew up in New York City and have had the opportunity to travel to other countries and meet people. I enjoy my professors and I look forward to the courses I am taking.

I regret that years ago I went to a vocational school vs. a college/university. Now, I'm soooooooo determined to get my degree, have the college experience and pursue a degree in nursing.

I have gotten out of my college excperience that you get what you earn. Every opprotunity or option that you get, you have to work for. College is what prepares you for real life and you have to treat it like that or you will not be the sucessful person that you want to be.

I have become much more social and outspoken. I have learned alot from the professors and my knowledge of the real world has expanded tramendously.

My experience in a community college environment so far has enabled me to realize that in this success-hungry society, everyone and anyone is replaceable at any given moment. For me, the key to standing out from the rest of the people seeking a 'dream' job is to have some way of showing that I am different from the person asking for an application next to me, which is why I am pursuing my college degree. As I am preparing to transfer to a university in the state of Florida, I constantly question why I am putting out all this time and money for some hope that a college degree will guarantee a spot of employment, which I know it doesn't. Maybe it's because I don't know what else to do at this point in my life, and I am just going with the flow. Or maybe it's because I love educating myself and I desire to build relationships while obtaining success-tools I couldn't get outside of the college atmosphere. I will only know if it has been valuable for me when it's all over. In the meantime, I'll enjoy it.

I'm learning about Critical Thinking and Learning Framework, at this time. I do think it will help me in the future and working with the public in the furture. In the past I have been a seamstress for many years, and no it is a dead-end career. So I am pursuing my Assocates Dergee in Accounting. To help with a new career. I have the time, since I was laied off from yet another job in sewing. Now I just need some help with the funding for my learning. I look forward to my new career in Accounting, and working with the public. I have worked with the public before, in retail. That don't pay very well either. That is why I have made the step to go back to school in my mid 40's. With a new career in Accounting, and later when my Grandchildren grow up and go to college I can help them. I was told, you have not because you ask not. Well I'm asking. Thank you so very much, for helping with my future, so I can help others with their furture.

Although I didn't have the most fantastic academic experience at Suny Albany I learned so many valuable life lessons. I learned to be a strong independent student. I learned how to make choices that I know are right for me, because I am the only one who truly knows what I need. I realized that teachers and administrators will not always guide you properly. I learned how to fight. Not physically. I still use my fighting skills to combat all of the males I encounter who don't know how to treat or talk to a woman. I figured out who I wanted to be, became that person and I learned how to be myself in so many different situations. Above all I met some of the most incredible friends I will ever have. College for me wasn't about what I learned in the classroom, but it definitely was about growing into a strong woman with a secure sense of self.

I learned a lot about myself while attending UAlbany. On the outside it may look like I just went to class and partied in college. It turned out to be so much more than that. In high school I lived in a bubble made of a mostly upper-middle class white population. I lacked confidence and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. When I was given my room assignment I was terrified because I was rooming with a person of a different race than my own. I am embarassed to admit that now. She turned out to be a great friend and through her I met a ton a people of different race, background, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. In that first year I made several friends that have remained to this day. They have made me aware of my strengths and have helped create a confidence and self-awareness that I was lacking. Through my classes I realized that helping people through medicine is my calling and because of the excellent help I recieved I'm on my way to achieving my goals with a fresh perspective on the world around me.

Learn new things and meet new people. Its quite an experience doing new stuff, exploring places youve never been.

Knowledge is far greater than any person I know, place I will ever live and work I shall endure. These first semesters of college for me have been a life changing process. I have been told to not do homework, not stress over tests but to instead: learn for life. My college experience has taught me that knowledge does not come with a test, intelligence is not acquired by a score and stressing out will only leave you- stressed out. I have gotten out of this experience what it truly means to "learn beyond limits.” And its value to me is never ending because what I am gaining now is a plethora of knowledge that won't ever expire but only aspire.

I didn't want to go to SUNY Albany. It was my last choice school - a public school, I thought. Why would I go there? I'm applying to Princeton, Vassar, Middlebury. I'm bound to get into one of them. So Albany was my backup - and a good thing it was. I did get into my share of the private schools, but with a big family like mine (a sister ahead of me and two brothers behind), we couldn't afford to put me through a school that would cost $50,000 per year. I went to the Albany open house grudgingly - and loved it. I'm so glad I chose SUNY Albany. My experience here has been limitlessly valuable: I've been lucky enough to have brilliant professors who are as passionate about teaching as I am about learning, an Honors College that makes it easy to befriend other driven and passionate students, and endless things to do in New York's capital city. I've been challenged more than I ever have and pushed to put forth my best work at all times - something that's made me a better student and a better person.

Suny Albany was not my first choice in colleges. I chose this school because i knew familiar faces from back home that attended this school. For the past 2 years i have been here, all the familiar faces were gone. What this college gave to me was the spirit and courage to break out of my comfort zone and meet new people. Now i have a group of friends all over the state of New York that i cherish. Albany showed me how to party hard, but only if you work hard. This school can be defined as my second parents as in the growing up experience was a lot easier with the help of the staff here and friendly students that you help you out on a day to day basis. Overall, I'm happy with my decision of chosing albany as my school because as of right now Im optimistic about my future and have everlasting friends that i will share the best moments of my life with.

So far I've partly learned how to live on my own, and it's been great. I'm learning how to take care of my own things when it comes to school and my personal things. This school has accepted me whole- heartedly and the people here are great. It's the type of place you always saw yourself at, and which I always saw myself at.
