What should every freshman at Tennessee Wesleyan University know before they start?

If i could go back to my senior year in high school with the knowlegde that I have now i would tell my self two things. The first thing I would tell myself would be, of course, the study more and do better in my classes than I did. I didnt realize how hard college courses were until I ended my first semester in college and took my finals. I would tell myself that college is nothing like high school in any sort of manner. Secondly, I would tell myself to practice Lacrosse even more than I had been. At the college level, the game is much faster and much harder. With the combination of these two things, I had no idea about the changes that I would incounter when I got to college.

I would tell myself to stay focused and strive to be the best student-athlete that I can be. Being a student-athlete means student first, athlete second. Academics are the main focus of your life and that I need to be grateful for the opportunites that I am given. I am a lucky person to be able to do what i love to do in college and I must remember to be thankful to my parents, coaches, teachers, and God.

My only advice would be probably the most cliche saying of all: just be yourself. This college is perfect for you. You'll do fine. Do your best and succeed.

I would tell myself to be more prepared. It's alot different than just switching from Elementary school to middle school then High school. It takes alot more effort and alot more studying is involved. So I would recommened getting everything ready in advanced and not beat around the bush. School can wait but only for a little bit. You can't just keep putting everything off. Sometimes you don't have time to do things at the last minute. I believe that anything is possible if you try try and try again. Don't give up even if you seem to fail at something because sooner or later you will get the hang of it.

Many of us look at being a high school senior as a time to relax. Many years of school and work have prepared some students to go on to college and others to begin in the work force. Some advice I would give myself would be to continue working hard through my senior year. I also would look at my test taking (ACT) and know that I should strive for higher scores because this can greatly assist in the financial burden of college. I went back to complete my degree after several years in the work force. I would tell myself if I did it again, to start out of high school and finish my degree. I would balance work and school because a college education is valuable. While I did gain tremendous experience through my job, I constantly look back and tell myself I should have just started college right out of high school. The best advice I can give is to work hard and not let up.

I would tell myself to study a lot more than I did, and make smarter choices in the classroom and around the community.

I recommend to any student considering college to make a list. List one's favorite activities, school subjects, and cities. Place the top three career choices of the student at the top of the list. From there, research the top schools in the selected areas that specialize in the activities and careers the student has chosen. Picking the best college for you is about finding the right fit. The student should visit the campus and perhaps stay overnight if the school allows it. Talk to students that are attending there. The student could even go to a few school functions. These days, it pays to make an educated decision on where to attend college. Once the student has located the right fit for himself, he ought to become as involved on campus as he can (without overloading himself). Joining a club or two, attending ball games, and meeting new people are vital parts of initiating one's self into college. The student should look to his advisors and experienced upperclassmen for advice and leadership. These mentors can help the student to make the most of his college experience.

Please visit the schools you are interested in to find the right fit. Something may appeal to you on paper or on line but untill you actually go and visit you don't know how you will fit.

Make sure you take as much time as possible to learn what kind of school is good for you. I only applied to 2 colleges in my life and I regret it everyday I go to class. I keep wondering what school could I really be at? Find out everything and dont be affraid to ask questions. There are plenty of people that want you at their school and they will answer any question and give you any information about the school that you want. No matter what school it is, there will always be one out there for you. Never feel like you arent wanted and you really have the choice to choose your future. My parents weren't involved enough in my decision. Parents, make sure you are guiding your son or daughter in the right direction. Dont force a decision on them but your opinion always matters to them no matter what they say. So dont go through this experienced unheard. I wish my parents were more involved in my choice of colleges.

Find out what the student needs most and look at their potential major. Let the college help find them.
