The University of Alabama Top Questions

I currently stay in Rose Towers. It is by far the worst dorm ever! There is mold, mildew, ceiling leaks, and toliets stay stopped up. It is not staying here at all!

There are many different dorm options at the University of Alabama. Some are new than others. If you are looking for space and newer facilities, then Riverside or Ridgecrest are a good choice. Both these dorms were recently built. They include kitchens and living rooms. Each dorm unit sleeps 4 people with 2 bathrooms. However, for girls, most choose Tutwiler. This is because of the location. It is closest to campus and classes. Also, it is right next to sorority row which is a plus for those in sororities. However, Tutwiler is very old and has community bathrooms. For some people this is a major turn-off.

Tis a tough question to answer mainly because it really depends on which dorm you are living in. If you are living in Tutwiler (all girls), Paty (all guys), or Rose Towers expect mold, a lot of people, and "public" showers. (They aren't really public but you do not have a bathroom in your dorm room, it's down the hall to the left and everyone on that hall showers there). These buildings are old, and with the exception of Paty, will be torn down and rebuilt soon. Buildings like Blount, built 11 years ago and home for me my first year, was not much better. The only plus to living in Blount was having a bathroom you shared with three other people (your roommate and suite mates). No kitchen except the one on the third floor and mold...why? Because the building was built so fast and the air vents do not flow air into the bathroom. They only flow air into the bedroom and hallway...the bathroom is completely cut off. So, naturally, take enough hot showers in a closed off room, mold will grow. Dorms like Lakeside, Ridgecrest and Riverside are newer and the envy of all of us who lived in other dorms. They are suite-styled dorms but have their own kitchen area and allows privacy with individual bedrooms. They have a more apartment feel to them and allow you to live with someone who you may not like but thanks to the layout of the room, you never have to see them unless you see them in the kitchen area. Lakeside West and Ridgecrest West are honors housing, Lakeside East and Ridgecrest East are not. Riverside East and West are honors housing and Riverside North is open to others. There are more dorms but those are the main ones. Regardless of where you live, remember that 1) as a freshman you must live on campus unless you have other real estate in the area and 2) ALWAYS keep your door locked. I don't care if you know everyone in the dorm, it is too easy for a non-resident to get into the building so just be cautious and lock your doors.

I live in Tutwiler which is very old and not the most well kept looking. I decided to live here instead of the nicer dorms because I rushed for a sorority and Tutwiler is the perfect location if you want to go Greek its right across from all the sorority houses. This helps because when I go to dinner at the ZTA house its right across the street and I know I wont be missing out on anything!

There are many different option to choose from when choosing a dorm. There are the suites that have two bathrooms, your own bedroom, and a common area.There is also a cheaper option; a double bedroom dorm with community bathrooms and showers. The community bathrooms are not as bad as they seem, it is just something to get used to.
