I'd say the size of Delaware is just right. It's big enough where that there's room to be involved in an array of school sponsered activities and meet a wide range of students. But it's small enough that after a semester you can feel at home there and by the end of your four years you'll see many familiar faces on the walks to class and around campus.
UD used to be known as a "party school" which results in some somewhat negative reactions when people hear that I went to UD. Partying is pretty prevalent on campus but it really has shifted away from being a "party school." Having worked in admissions, I can say that UD gets more selective every year and is rising in the ranks academically. The party scene is there if you want it but there is plenty of opportunity to get a respectable education. I believe its academic status will overshadow its former reputation in the years to come.
Newark, DE is a college town. Some people may see this as a negative as you may not seem to escape the college atmosphere. I enjoyed it after moving off campus because while you acquire independence odds are your friends are living in a house down the street. Since there's such a high percentage of students living off campus, there is great opportunity to meet your neighbors.
Recent controversy on campus would probably be security in Newark, DE. Several muggings, among other incidents, make it a little sketchy to walk around Newark alone at night. I would say walking directly on campus is generally safe, as there are more security measures in place.
The football team has been quite competitive recently (they won the championship in 2003.) Consequently, there is school pride on campus but I wouldn't say it's overwhelming. The games give you something to do on weekends and are usually a good time.
I wouldn't say there is anything particularly unusual about UD. You could probably have similar experiences at serveral schools around the same area.
My overall experience at UD was positive. The size of and activities at UD, as well as the general atmosphere, make it easy to make new freinds. While I received a good education and enjoyed my actual time spent on campus, I've found that it's the specific friends I met that made my college experience as good as it was.

The best thing about UD?! Everything! I absolutely loved everything about University of Delaware. I love that its a big school but it has that small school feeling, i love the people, the classes, the school spirit, the campus...everything!
I get very positive reactions when I tell people I graduated from UD. Everyone seems to have a fun story related to the school. I have so many memories from UD. My favorite part - the people. I have met people that i will never forget. My best friends are the ones I have met at UD.
Somethink i will always remember - the crazy religous guy who preached to the students outside of kirkbride and smith every tuesday and thursday afternoon.

I think UD is a perfect size school. Theres still tons of people to meet yet I always feel like I have a core group of friends. Its big enough that there are plenty of opportunities yet I still feel very involved on campus and there are a lot of opportunities to be a leader.
I think that people respect the University of Delaware locally! Many of my friends were rejected from UD but got into other good schools like the University of Maryland. However, I've noticed that when travelling around the nation for soccer tournemnts, we are not very well known. Delaware is a small state without any huge sity or major attraction so I think people assume UD is not a great school.
I spend most of my time either in class or in my house off South Chapel. I am often running around main street to do errands or visiting my friends and boyfriend in their off campus houses or apartments.
Brittany
UD's campus is beautiful. I think the number of students is just right. When I tell people I attend UD, one of the first reactions I get is, "OH, that's a party school." While students like to party, I wouldn't classify Delaware as a top party school. As I further in my undergraduate career, UD is getting harder to get into and the incoming freshman classes keep getting smarter. I think UD is beginning to be recognized for its strength in academics. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the FIRE incident involving Residence Life at the university. Students are proud to be Blue Hens. The football team received the most support. Students often complain about parking, and classroom availability.

best thing- people (students and faculty) and community (gorgeous campus and awesome main st!!)
change- career services- more help with direction/setting up on campus interviews/career searching, etc
size- just right...always meeting new people but not too big that you lose touch or get swallowed up
football games are a blast!!(esp. when the team's good) most of the school spirit is there and tailgating beforehand. i had fun at the basketball games too, but there wasn't a huge student crowd.
Michelle
There is a great deal of school pride. UD football is huge and the tailgates are INSANE!
UD has great bars compared to other schools I've visited, and overall the party scene is considered to be one of the best around.
Main Street has a great variety of food--great restaurants and take-out places. It rivals any campus' I've seen.
It is very very difficult to get into bars unless you are 21. Newark is veryyy strict about fake IDs. Because of this, most underage kids go to house parties and most 21+ go to the bars.
Nicole
The best thing about UD is that its a great all around college experience. I wish there was more of a bar scene and that there weren't so many townies
Sarah
Best: size, beautiful campus
Size: just right
People say UD is a good school, must be smart, etc.
Time on campus: The Review
College Town, Main Street
Administration -- whatever.
Recent controversy: Residence Life/FIRE
Lots of school pride
Always remember The Review
complaints about diversity

I feel that my school is the perfect size. When I tell people I go here I always get positive responses, but more so from parents who have children around my age and understand the university's current standing and level of competition. I spend most of my time on campus going to the gym or class. This is definitly a college town. I think that some of the administration is to caught up in ridiculous rules. The Strike and Judicial Affairs system is by far an ongoing controversy. Lots of school prode.
Liz
The best thing about UD is the green. That is why I came here. The size is just right, not too big, not too small... Overall I feel like its an average, typical college.
Caitlin
Best thing about UD- great all around college. Great campus/town, likeable students, great education for a good value, there are things to do and get involved in.
I would stop the school from getting so involved with Greek life.
Right size.
I get positive responses when people hear that I graduated from UD.
I spent most of my junior and senior year on main street.
Colelge town.
Administration- it depends. Some people were very helpful and some were not. I had some professors who I really did not care for and that makes the classes much less enjoyable.
Controversy on campus- safety issues and Greek life issues
Yes there is school pride.
I will always remember my entire experience at UD- homecomings, being in a sorority, winning the football championship my freshman year, and everything else.
Complaints- dining hall food isn't good, dorms aren't nice/too far from things
Sarah
I live on Main St so I spend most of my time around there. It is so nice being so close to campus AND the restaurants and shops.
Jessie
I love UD more than I thought I would. Our campus is beautiful and well kept. Main St. is definitly the best thing about UD. It's at the center of everything and gives UD its character.
Paige
Perfect size, great business school, turns into a bar school when you're 21. Don't try to get into bars if you're not. Main street has great shops and restaurants, UD police/ newark police are ridiculous and it's impossible to not get in trouble at least once.
Julie
I love that UD is a "college town" The buildings are beautiful, and campus is maintained well (the grass is always green, etc.) I love that main street is a place filled with restaurants, stores, and bars -- you will always see people you know and shops that appeal to the college student. There is also a great public safety system BUT i wish there were cabs that we could pay for -- that would make traveling a lot more safe and a lot less of a hassle at night. Also, there is NOT enough parking at UD.
Alex
I think UD is definitely the right size school for me. Its not too big, but not too small at the same time. I think there is a good amount of diversity on campus which is nice considering I came from a very homogeneous high school. I think the town of Newark is cute and nice, however I think it could use some improvements. It gets boring after a while, I'd like to see some more different establishments that cater to students. Parking is terrible at UD. Many lots are inconveniently located and parking is extremely expensive and difficult to find at certain times.
Katie
I think our school is a great size with a great reputation. On campus I'm usually with friends or studying. I think the police in the area are a bit ridiculous busting parties instead of worrying about dangerous crimes (robbery, rape, and the use of weapons). I would say there is a fair amount of school pride.
Amanda
UD is just the right size. People hear that UD is a great school. I think its a college town. There is school pride.
Shelby
The best thing about UD is the students. They are basically all normal. There is not one specific "type" but most people are laid back and not too snooty or weird. If there was one thing I would change it would be the number of townies that hang around Newark. I love the University of Delaware but I hate the state. I think the school is just the right size but it needs more boys. When I tell people I go to UD they usually say thats pretty cool and they ask if i know other people who they know go there. It is a college town but there's not much of a "town" mostly just one block of main street with a few places to eat and maybe 4 bars. I do not really have a problem with the UD administration. I like that they are trying to raise the bar and make the school more elite. There have been race relations problems on campus where minority students felt violated by other students who dressed up for a theme party. It was pretty ridiculous and the minority students took it way too far. I think there is a lot of school pride, not quite as much as other bigger schools, but a good amount. There really isn't anything unusual about UD. The experience that I will never forget is my study abroad experience in South Africa. I think the most frequent complaints are about the alcohol policy that is way too strict.
Nick
best thing about UD is its closeness to big cities and it's reputation. I would want the school to have more advisers for students who want to do something after college. Good college town, although the town could be more supportive of the school. Lots of school pride. Admin is okay here, but not too great. I spend most of my time at my off campus house, which is big here by the way. Lots of off campus aprtmnts, and houses. Most of them have parties but so does greek life so you can do whatever you choose. One memory is freshman year itself and meeting so many people and just being a naive "freshman". Most complaints here are about cops, but they have gotten better.
