Beginning my college experience at a community college proved to be very beneficial for me. When I graduated high school, I had no idea what path I wanted to take in life. Therefore I decided to attend community college to get an idea of what major I wanted to pursue. When I enrolled in classes at Scott Community College, I discovered that I qualified for the Honors Program, which allowed me to take a class called Discovering Diversity in Disabilities through Autobiographical Literature. This class opened my eyes to the large realm of disabilities children have, and how they can be helped to excel in their daily life activities. After taking this class, I knew that I wanted to help children with disabilities, specifically in the classroom. I also participated in doing a service project for the Honors Program, in which I worked at a day camp for children in Davenport, Iowa. Although I have always loved children, this experience gave me the opportunity to find out what it would be like to work with children every day. These two college experiences allowed me to discover my passion, which is to give children with disabilities a better future.

During my first year of college I have learned the importance of always striving to gain more knowledge. In college one puts forth effort, and puts their career goals into fruition, and finds out who they are trying to be. One learns their strengths, weaknesses, and their minds mature. I have become one of the best speakers in my Public Speaking class, I was nominated for a book scholarship in my English class, and my Science professor offered me a reference also. College has made me more social, responsible, and capable, all of which will be very important as a psychologist. I am working towards acquiring a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology. College has become invaluable in my pursuit of that goal.

During high school, I really wasn't an outgoing person. I was very shy around people and I couldn't really be myself around new people. When I talked, I would often stutter and was just a bit awkward to talk with. After being at the University of Akron for a semester, I could really see a change in myself. I could sense a bit of charisma in myself. I could speak to people and actually hold a conversation. Meeting new people has become easy for me. I guess my problem was that I was to afraid to make mistakes in fron of people. People are people and we are all bound to make mistakes. College has also helped my organization and study skills. It was a must that I change how I studied and how much I studied. I also carry a planner with me full of due dates and appointments that I never miss and it helps to stay organized like that. All of these huge changes that I have made in my life are all thanks to my experience in college. Without coming here and staying on campus, none of these much needed changes would be possible.

at first i was really scared of going to college many people, starting college is a frightful event. The new world of education that awaits you can scare the person that’s not ready for the new challenge. Not only is it a new experience, but an entirely different atmosphere from the high school life you had been living for the past three years. A lot of people let the thought alone scare them from making the initial attempt to further their education. People who experience these jitters make the assumption that college is not for them. My first semester of college included. The expectations from my professors in the classroom, my expectations I had upon arriving, and the physical property of the campus. the best thing i gotten out of it though is meeting a lot of friends and being being able to communicate with my professors. the last and the best thing is the food.

From my college experience so far, I have learned that you need a hard work ethic in order to get what you want in life. The ones that come out on top are the ones that dedicate themselves to what they love and where they want to go in life. It has been so valuable to attend because before college, everything seemed to fall on my lap and it was easy for me to succeed. Here, I have gotten the wake up call that shows me that the real world expects the best determination from you and not so much how good you are at it but if you have the passion to learn about it and grow from it.

I have gotten a better understanding of diversity and accepting others who are different than myself. I have gained a wider knowledge of the campus and resources available to students. Being an English major, I've learned ways to polish my writing and how to be descriptive without verbosity. I've also learned the importance of giving back through the Americorps Educational Award Program , completing three-hundred hours of volunteer work. It has been valuable for me to attend the University of Akron because of the personal aspect that it naturally has. There is a sense of nurture in the advisors and most administrators. They really want to help students pursue their dreams and that is one of the things I love about The University of Akron.

My college experience has been very fulfilling. After living in a dorm on campus I have learned the skills of time management, self discipline, and how to live on my own. The shock of moving somewhere new without knowing anyone was a tough adjustment, but has helped me face new challenges with my head held high. I have met new people and made many new friends. My confidence level is much higher than it was, because college has given me a sense of self-worth in really understanding who I am. I can now confidently take on any challenge that society gives me and I know that I will succeed. College really did throw me into "the real world" and force me to adjust on my own. Now I will confidently say I can take on anything life gives me!

I have gooten alot out of my college experince. I have met many diffrenet people that I would never have meet before. The class rooms were complitly different then they were back in highschool, the teachers were less strict and tried to relate to the students on a personal level. The the classes went at a faster pace then a high school class. Our class would go through two or three chapters a day. What I have gotten out of college is how important it is to manage my time. Becouse the avarage college student has homework to do, write a paper for a nother class and studyiing for exames all at the same time. I learned that if you do not manage your time wisely you well fail your classes. Another thing that i have learned is that it is ok to go get help if you need it. At the university there were plenty of tutering places to go to get extra help for writing papers or getting help on understanding the subject being taught. Why it has been so valuable to attend college is becouse it allowed me to see what the outside world is like.
