all the school cares about is making money off of their basketball and football athletes. uconn will also take money from students in any way, shape, or form. instead of putting every ounce of money they have into D1 basketball, they should consider students trying to get a college degree to make a living and put money into reslife.

The best think about UConn is how many people there are and how much stuff there is to do. If I could change anything, I would make it not a dry campus, and I would have campus cops (which are also state cops) to chill out about drinking and weed-smoking regulation. At first UConn seems too big, but if you're a sociable person you'll have fun. When I tell people I go to UConn, everyone knows what I'm talking about, knows us for our good athletics (football and basketball are our star teams-- Big East and everything) and party reputation, but also that it's a pretty tough school academically speaking (at least for out-of-staters to get into). UConn Storrs is in the middle of a cow field-- the only thing to do in Storrs, other than go to the one or two bars and stuff that cater to the students, is to be at UConn. The administration leaves something to be desired, especially when it comes to resident life and getting stuck with crappy housing, or picking classes and getting stuck with a bad pick date and not being able to get into any of your classes. Also, parking on campus is impossible. Having a car is more trouble than it's worth if you live on campus, but useful if you live in an off-campus apartment.

The best thing about UCONN is that there is always someone there to help you out. People think just because UCONN is a big school, that you don't get the resources to help you in your time of need. This is not true. There is a lot of help out there, you just have to go get it. When you first get here, the campus seems huge! After a while, it doesn't seem as big as it used to be. Storrs, CT is basically UCONN. UCONN is its own town, which is a cool thing. One thing that you'll love about UCONN is the amount of school pride. The food isn't that bad either.

This sounds weird, but the best thing about UConn is that even though it's pretty large it can often feel small. Additionally, the large size can really work in your favor (unless you're in an obscure major) because you can avoid bad professors. You can find stuff on almost every UConn professor on ratemyprofessor.com and sites like that simply due to the fact that there are so many students taking so many classes. I suppose the thing I'd change would be that I'd prevent the geese from inhabiting mirror lake for the entire fall semester (they make a mess on the grass and can be noisy) and I would make my freshman dorm closer to the rest of campus. These, however, are trivial things. There are lots of things to do on campus, but you have to take the initiative to involve yourself (go to the involvement fair, pay attention to bulletins and your email, etc). That's one of the big upshots to UConn: it's such a big school that the administration doesn't individually coach every student to success. Instead, the school lays out all of the opportunities and activities for the students and we have to go make decisions for ourselves and manage our own lives on an academic, extra-curricular, and social level. I feel like they leave us to our own devices more than some other school's i've seen, but they still have safety-nets in place if we need help. Every department i've been in has a tutoring center if you need it, and there are groups and organizations to help you for every kind of problem you could possibly get yourself into. Despite the size, they really do care about the students and they make a noticable effort; they just want you to get used to managing your own life because that's what you have to do after you graduate. There is a decent amount of school pride. Whenever you go to an event, you usually get a UConn t-shirt of some type thrown in your direction. Also, because it's a Division I school there are tons of sports, and a lot of them are just on the club or intramural level. I feel like that's just one of many ways students showcase their school pride. Most frequent complaints? That you have 10 minutes, max, to walk from MSB to Arjona in the middle of the winter. But that can usually be solved by some fancy scheduling.

UConn definitely has a large student population and an even larger campus. This can be intimidating, but only if you let it. Once you find your "niche," whether it's a favorite study spot or an extracurricular, you will immediately find that you fit right in. I personally felt welcome here the moment I stepped onto the marching band rehearsal field. It's where I belong.

When I came to UConn it was like being transmitted back to 7th grade. All of the people are superficial and low - no one wants to have real, personal, caring relationships. Rather, the life of a UConn student contains doing enough school work just to get by and then drinking as much as possible during the weekend.

Housing is a big problem and Reslife isn't very understanding or accomodating to those to don't live in CT and need answers and guidance.
UCONN likes to say they have school pride but few students do. How can they when we are allotted tickets to football or basketball games. I came here for the teams and the comraderie but I've been to one game in all my years here. I know freshman who got tickets before me as a senior.
Transferring here was not fun. While I understand the loss of credits in changing schools, I don't understand how I (and every other transfer I know) was placed in suites rather than dorms. It's difficult to make friends in that type of environment.

There's nothing around except the school. Luckily it's huge, although in the first few months that's intimidating, though now any smaller school would feel constricting for me. There's always something to do if you know enough people/pay attention.
It's a bit close to home, as I live in the same state. Most students are from Mass/Conn. We hate on Jersey a bit.
The gay culture isn't as prominent as I expected compared to high school. People are accepting, or at least those I associate with are.

Uconn is way too large. I have had a lot of problems getting into classes that I need because they fill so fast. Many classes have 100+ people in them and you do not get to know your professors at all. Socially, due to being such a large school it is hard to form lasting friendships from year to year because you are costantly placed in different groups in such a large amount of people.
Megan
When I tell people I go to UConn their eyes always get a bit wider and they smile and nod and say "Oh, UConn's good!" but shortly after that, they ask me how the parties are. I don't go out and drink (i stay in and imbibe, thank you very much. No need to hike to carriage/celeron just for some bad beer and stupid frat boys). But, most often people are pleased, they know uconn's a good school and a prestigious one (even if it "is only a state college") and that I work hard to stay here and do well.

The only reason I went to UConn was because it was close to home and easy. I really DONT like it at Storrs, its boring and there really is nothing to do.
Lauren
the people are really nice and friendly.
the academic advisors aren't very helpful.
a lot of the buildings/dorm are made to look nicer on the outside than they actually are on the inside.
nice landscaping on campus.
Rory
Perfect size, not too big, not too small. People from connecticut are impressed when you say you go to UCONN, but anyone outside of the state is not. Unless they're basketball fans. When it comes to sports, school pride shines the brightest, to the point of unsportsmen like conduct against other school, but thats just the passion. The biggest complaints are the prices for how little is given. Expensive state school just makes everyone on edge about money.
Stephanie
While many say that UConn is huge and that its confusing to get around the campus, after your first day of just walking around the campus seems to shrink. It seems that you can get anywhere in 5 minutes. I use to think that I would never figure out how to get around but I have an easier time getting around here than my hometown (which I've lived in for 18 years).
Alix
Opportunity, opportunity, opportunity. Uconn is definately what you make of it. You have a wide range of options in terms of getting involved, its impossible not to.

Its a nice large university that feels like a small atmosphere...its kind of secluded but a good college town with everything right on campus that you could need. Overall classes are large which is good and bad at times. There is great school spirit seeing how we are a Division 1 school and many students are proud to be huskies...there is even a lottery for bball tickets. the housing situation however SUCKS especially for older undergrads...someone needs to come up with a better system.
Mel
The school is very large, but everyone finds their own niche. I spend most of my time at the library or just hanging out with friends, or participating one of the countless programs happening pretty much every evening. There's enough school pride for basketball. Football pride is building.
Shannon
Like I said earlier, UConn is a great school with a lot of really smart people. The campus is huge and I wouldn't have it any other way. At first I wanted to attend a smaller college & was really upset when I had to attend UConn because of money issues, but I am so glad Marist ended up being too expensive! I have visted my friends from highschool at their colleges and they aren't that great compared to UConn. The campus is like its own town and it makes the college experience that much better. Everything you need is on campus & the buses make it really easy for those students without a car to get everywhere. A lot of people are really excited when I tell them I go to UConn. The most frequent question is about basketball. Everyone on campus has a lot of school pride too, even I have some pride for this school and that usually isn't really my thing. I am a senior now & I'm planning on taking an extra semester to get the rest of my credits, but when I leave I am going to be really upset. I am going to miss all of the great friends I have made and all of the fun things we do on campus.
Jesse
People can't get over the fact that the campus is "huge". Yah, Uconn is basically the city of Storrs, CT: Look up 06269 and you will get "University of Connecticut", but don't be intimidated by its size. After the first few weeks on campus, you'll know where everything is and the only thing intimidating about it will be how long it takes you to get to some of your classes-Uconn does have it's own bus system!
Stephanie
The best thing about Uconn is all the activities it provides. It presents you with so mony new oppertunities that you may have never gotten the chance to engage in until you came here. There is a rock climbing gym, that I had to experience. You go there for a training session where they teach you how to climb the wall with and without a harness. There are shorter walls and taller walls and instructers all around willing to help when you go to climb on your own. They also offer a skydiving team which, although I havent tried, I think is incredible. They also offer interesting inturmurals such as innertube water polo. Now how often would you get to participate in that? Not to mention one activity that is comming up that I am very excited about, oozeball. It is mud vollyball. You sign up a team and participate in a tournement, where you recieve a tee shirt and a team picture. Plus there are little things all over the place, machanical bulls and moon bounces, and stuff a bear which is like build a bear and tons of oppertunitys to get free uconn gear and accessories.
I think although Uconn is large, it is the perfect size. It is not gigantic. You can walk the length of the campus within 15 minutes which is not to burdensom. Yet it is large enough where people become familiar, yet it is easy to avoid those people whom you do not like. I like that when you go into a dining hall or into a new classroom, not everyone knows every dtail of your life. Who you have dated, hwo your grades are, what groups you are involved with, what state your from. I transferred from a small school in New York and I hated how after the first semester everyone in your graduating class knew as much as they could want to know about you.
When I tell people I go to Uconn they think it is neat and generally tell me that they applied here or have at one point in their lives concidered going here, but didnt for one specific reason or other, not because they just didnt like it. They also always ask me if I go to the basketball and football games. Obviously football and basketball are big here. And I love going to every game I get a chance to go to. They are so much fun, the student section gets you all pumped up and the cheering and screaming is non-stop. It is a great atmosphere.
The one thing I would change is that process of class and house selection. The time you get is random so you could really benifit or really lose out. I also dont like that you really dont start taking classes in your major until junior year, you take mostly General education requirements freshmen and sohpomore year. So how do you know you will even like your intended major if you dont get a shot at it until your third year of college. Im a business major and havent taken a business class at Uconn yet. what happened if once i start takeing classes and reaize I dont like them? I guess I wont be graduating on time.
I spend most of my time on campus in my room doing homework. During the week I have to really buckle down so I can have free time on weekends. Although Uconn is great and I couldnt imagine being anywhere else, it is alot of work and you really need to dedicate alot of time to it. You need to read the book and go to ofice hours in order to really do great. I also dont reccoment skippin class although it is very easy to since attendence is not usually taken. Skipping just once class can put you so far behind and cause you to miss so much important information
I think the teadhers and everyone here in administration are great. If you ask them a question they will do there best to help you. They really are looking out for their students. The one thing I must say, they are strict on deadlines so make sure you follow them!
The recent controversy on campus is housing selection. Apparently they let to many seniors remain on campus so every other class is getting the shaft in where they live. I lucked out though and had a senior pull me into a nice living facility. i cant complain.
Uconn is everything I could ask for.
