James

There is a lot of school spirit at UMass. The average UMass student is from Massachusetts and has a lot of love for New England sports, but with 25,000 kids there is a community of almost all types of cultures and people. They also know how to relieve stress on the weekends, almost to a fault.

I have not really had many experiences with any groups on campus besides my iCons cohort, with is a specialized honors group in science and innovation. In this group the students are all hard working and focused on their future. There really is no type of student that would feel out of place at UMass because there are so many students and groups that you can always find your niche. Most students dress normally when going to class, but you'll always find the people who wear their pajamas and even suits too. Different types of students interact a lot because we are in close contact with everyone, but this is generally on only an acquaintance level.Pretty much, the students at UMass are exactly like one would think. There's a sprinkle of every type of person and almost anyone would be able to find there place with people who they enjoy being with.

The student body at UMASS is extremely difficult to describe. As I stated earlier, the multiplicity of race, ethnicity, culture, socio-economic background lend to an interesting experience. No student would feel out of place at UMASS, every group is amply represented. As far as attire, students wear every type of clothing you could imagine, ranging from trendy Northfaces to religious wear. Students are from everywhere, as are the graduate students and teaching assistants that instruct in most classes. Students are politically active, and are, to be candid, mostly left leaning as most college students are.

Jaime

Since the school is so large there's a wide range of students. We're unfortunately known for our partying and I'd say a majority of students do fit that bill. The girls have low self-esteem and are incredibly materialistic and the boys don't think through their actions. There are pretty much every type of group here, somewhere. There are party people, nerds, stoners, political activists, hippies, studious students, everything so there isn't really one group to zero in on or use to represent the school. Like most school financial background ranges, college in general tends to be upper-middle class I guess.

Annalise

I have honestly met so many different types of people here at UMass. Like I described above, general stereotypes are present that coincide with certain areas. I really think that almost anyone can come here and find a place that they fit in. Most students are from Massachusetts, as it is a state school. There are many students from lower to middle-class backgrounds, though what the exact demographics are I do not know. UMass has had to raise admission standards because so many students are applying due to rising costs of college. I would say that there are a lot of students who are politically active; there is currently a group Occupying one of the greens in the middle of campus. Someone mentioned recently that a lot of the departments at UMass are geared toward social justice. That being said, I think there also seems to be a large portion of students who are here for a degree and a good time and going along for the ride. The types of things you join may determine which types of people you will encounter.
