What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Erika

Mizzou has everything. Everyone goes to football games, and everyone has a lot of pride in being a tiger. There's also always stuff going on. Jesse Hall has fine arts events, as does the theatre department on a regular basis. The dorms were pretty open, but as a lot of dorms have FIGS or a lot of greek life, it may be harder to be close to people if you dont' spend that time with them too. The Commons has a bowling alley and there's always sponsored things going on the weekends. The City of Columbia events are very accessible for students as well, with campus located adjacent to down town.

Students in dorms leave there doors open if they live in the older buildings. the newer buildings prevent students from doing so. there is endless possibillites of things to get into around Columbia. Last weekend, I went to the true/ false film festival.

I went to the City Museum and the Zoo in St. Louis last weekend. I think everybody needs to go to the City Museum, it is the happiest place on earth! I think there are TONS of stuff on campus that you can do on the weekend without drinking. I often go on photoventures on campus and just have fun exploring places that you usually wouldn't go during the day, and see things that you usually wouldn't see. The campus is pretty open at night, and really exciting! Off campus there are a lot of unexpected things to do. There are a whole bunch of parks to explore, the cities offer some pretty fun activities and Columbia has a lot of cool things going on all the time. The T/F festival is always really exciting, and there are so many more things to do that it would blow your head off! The music scene is really amazing here as well.

When I lived in the dorms last year I felt like everyone was really open about meeting new people. It is because of that open experience that I was able to meet some really awesome friends that I enjoy hanging out with.

Frats and Sororities for sure. No competition I'm not involved in any groups. I have a lot of friends in lots of groups but I dont partake in any of it. Most students in the dorms tend to leave their doors open, sometimes when no ones home. Most people came to a big school to meet lots of new people so you wont find many people in the dorms being seclusionalistic. I think I made that word up. Mizzou football games are the biggest display of pride and popularity I've ever attended. The mens basketball games are pretty popular as well. The mizzou dating scene is a great one. I've met a lot of people at mizzou who have turned into girlfriends of mine. A date with a girl downtown is fun because theres always a lot going on and there's a lot of variety as far as finding somewhere new to go. I met my closest friends in my dorm. I'm living with a guy off campus who lived down the hall from me last year. If I'm awake at 2am on a tuesday I'm out of my mind. I have a class in 6 hours and I must be pissed I'm still up. I party a lot but rarely on school nights. I work hard to play hard, but not that hard. Big traditions and events are all the MU-KU sports events. Those are always bound to draw a few thousand people year after year. Mizzou students party A LOT. I see people go out every night of the week! its insane, I love it. I dont find fraternities or sororities all that important. I know its a great way to meet new people and develop lifelong friendships with a bunch of good people but I'd rather just not get myself involved. I'm sure to the people in them that their frat/sorority is their #1 priority, but to me, nah. Last weekend is a weekend I'd like to forget. I drank, a lot, and was a complete wreck. I hit on a lot of girls and got a lot of numbers, namely all over my arms, but yea, I wish I would've gotten some names with those numbers...:/ Wouldn't know! Off campus I enjoy biking, running and partying. its a good combo.

-Greek groups are #1 for sure. -I am involved with KOMU and SigEp. -I don't live in the dorms, but when I did most people kept them closed because they automatically close without a prop. -Football is very popular and the others dwindle on down from there. -Guest speakers are very popular - the good ones at least. Theatre not so much. -The dating scene? I thought it was just hook-ups is the mentality. -Closest friends came from my major, my fraternity and dorm. -2am on Tuesday means studying. -Traditions include football games, homecoming, greek week, etc... -People party usually 2-4 days a week. -Greek life is almost too important. -This weekend I worked during the days and partied by the night. -Not many other options since Columbia is a big college town and kind of small. -Off campus includes eating out, and parties.

Let me drop some knoweldge on you: the dorms are terrible. Everyone's dorms in every school in the country are various levels of terrible. At Mizzou, you're only required to spend one year in them (if you don't have a Greek affliation). This is a good thing. When I was there several dorms did not have air conditioning. Tour guides will lie to your face when they say you really don't need them - you do. You live in Missouri. It stays hot until November. Don't fall for the lies. All that being said, I made my closest, dearest friends in the dorms. We were part of two FIGs (Freshman Interest Group) who lived in the now demolished Smith Hall (at Providence and Stadium, across from the Athletic Complex). The FIG allowed you to co-enroll in three different general education courses with people you'd also live with, and presumably, have some other things in common. I was in FIG 65 "Exploring Journalism". It seems like kind of a hoky thing, right? Living and going to class with strangers? Exploring Journalism? But let me tell you something - it worked. It personalized this giantic campus, gave me automatic people to talk to and brought me right out of my shell. Eight years from meeting those people, I'm still good friends with the majority of them, and keep in contact with some others I lived with. When I celebrated my 26th birthday two weeks ago, three of the six people who joined me for drinks were from my FIG. I've shared the last eight years of my life with these people and every day, I'm still amazed. We were the experiment that went terribly RIGHT. The way in which we bonded was exactly what the people who created the FIG program wanted it to happen. It made all the difference to me - without having my second family down there I wouldn't have stayed longer than that first year.

Partying balls at Phi Delta Theta with their ice luge and a PVC beer bong is the way to go. I have never been so fucked up and had such a good time. Oh, and all the ladies are there so it's awesome.

I love being in a sorority. It's the best way to meet people and party. But aside from partying and drinking, Greek life is good for so many different things. It provides you with the opportunity for leadership experiences. The Greek community does a ton for homecoming! They make floats, house decorations, and put on a show that's preformed at Jesse Hall. Greek life is the best thing at Mizzou. The guest speakers that come to Mizzou are great. On Valentine's day, Sex Talk Sue came and sold out Jesse Hall. She was great! I've also seen Broadway performances on campus. Last year, I went and saw Rent at Jesse Hall. It's safe to say, that people party ALL THE TIME! It's not uncommon for people to go out during the week. I know many people who go out 4-5 times a week! I met my closest friends through Greek life.

im not really involved with groups, the large groups just dont seem appealing, in my dorm people left their doors open (Gillett) last year but at the same time again with the newer dorms its completely opposite... id like to get into the guest speakers/concerts but never really have the time. Frats and soros are important for a certain type of person-- im not saying there all the same people i no some good people in each but for the most part you can spot them-- as for activities on sat night w/o drinking, play videogames, go to a concert, thers sometimes ufc fights at restaraunts... but overall it is a heavy drinking environment
