University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus Top Questions

A huge aspect of OU is the greek community, which is very popular here on campus. I am involved in Pi Beta Phi sorority. Most students in the dorms lock their doors, however, I haven't since the first day of school. Football games are very very popular, basketball and other sports are definately overshadowed by football season. I met my closest and only friends through my sorority. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday night, I am either studying or hanging out with my boyfriend. People party every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, unless something special is happening during the week, where in that case a party might happen during a weekday. Last weekend I partied on Thursday and Friday night, and went to a dateparty on Saturday night. When I go off campus, it is usually to make a run to Target or WalMart or the mall. Rarely do I go to the movies or out to eat.

It is mostly about me and Jake. We went for a walk last weekend in the country and he got lost for awile until I found him. I love all the other Delta Omicron Gamma's.

I don't date much since I have no testoserone.

Again, the greek system dominates the social scene. I hate to say it but I cannot imagine anyone's social life without one. Students typically leave their doors open. On the dating scene, date parties typically are the start of most relationships. Last weekend, we had a party at my fraternity, went to a Country Club in Oklahoma City, and just had a great time. Since there is a strong Christian population, you can find others that don't drink and have fun.

The social life at OU is very prominant. I am a part of a sorority which I love and am very thankful I am a part of, I have met some of my closest friends through that. I would recommend giving fraternities and sororities a try, but if it is not for you there are many other ways to meet people. The students are very friendly so it is very easy to make friends and there is always something going on that you can be a part of. There is something for everyone from the person who likes to party to the person who would rather not, I have never felt bored.

Football season was always fun until the last year I was at OU. It seemed like the OU fans from out of town were more unfriendly than ever. My car would always get messed with and they would always make fun of me because I didn't look exactly like them. I felt out of place, even though I most certainly was not. I grew up playing football, and was a huge fan, I just didn't look the part. The dating scene seemed to shrink as I got older. The availability of girls was just smaller. When you live in the dorms, the possibilities are endless, but then you move out and lose touch. Then you can meet people at parties or at friends houses, but the opportunities aren't as frequent. I met most of my best friends during my junior year. I met them all at different times, but many of them weren't even students, and at the time, neither was I. We were all at the same party where we all knew mutual friends and that's how I met them. That's what was fun about OU, is that you have a mutual friend with almost anyone that is on campus. We went to the Library a lot, a bar off-campus, and we spent a lot of time at our friends houses. We had house parties a lot and we went to house parties all the time. That was the extent of our social lives, but our social lives were very healthy. We went to see live music all the time too. I miss my social life at OU.

I found that many campus groups are resume boosters and that the students were not actually interested in the group itself. I had a terrifc dorm experience. After moving to a house, I lived with four girls from my hall for a year and a half and stayed close with several others. All of my close friends at school I met in the dorm.

I'm in the greek scence, so that is what I would say. I'm in the tri delta sorority and it's the best. Students leave the doors open in the dorms. GAME DAYS are my favorite day of the year. You can't even explain how much fun it is! The school does an amazing job at bringing speakers in and they are always packed!! I met my closest friends through my sorority and the girls on my hall. If I am wake at 2am on a Tuesday I'm probably studying. OU/TX is the absolute best weekend of the year. It is impossible to expain it. YOU HAVE TO GO!! I go out three times a week, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday!! Thursday is always the most fun!! In my opinion, greek life is everything but I know you don't have to be in one because there are so many other things that you can do!! Last weekend, I went to the bar on thursay night to hear my favorite band, then I went to our date party, totally tri delta, and then I went to another date party on saturday night!!!! Go to bricktown and go to dinner and a movie or hang out with friends, there is always somethig going on!!

Campus Activities Council--heads pretty much everything that happens. Sports Teams in general--if you're an athlete, you have it made. I tutor athletes and honestly, it seems like if you can run fast, you can get paid to come here. But sports bring in a ton of money, and pay me, so I'm not complaining. On game days, Norman basically shuts down for the day. Athletics are huge. On the flip side, theater and music thrive, too. I've seen spectacular plays, operas, ballets, modern dances, and even performances by world-renowned professionals, including a Japanese Noh drummer and an English pianist. Dating is dating is dating. I see pressure to hook up only on the bar scene. But mix alcohol and young people together anywhere and that's a given. I met my closest friends in various places: in the dorms the first week of school, on the South Oval talking about poetry, at Cafe Plaid, and by living next door. The Greek scene is huge. HUGE. But the non-Greek scene definitely exists. Last weekend, I hung out with some girl friends, went to two different house parties, read some poetry at a local reading, danced at a bar, worked, did some arts and crafts, went to Wal-Mart, watched six Turner Classic Movies, and did homework. Alcohol doesn't define fun. Lots of times I find myself randomly hanging out in the street with my neighbors doing cartwheels or taking walks. Kids love to be outside here. I've had picnics, had jam sessions with friends, get coffee a LOT, and see movies. The University offers free movies every weekend, free concerts nearly every weekend and lots of fun events scattered around the campus. Just this week I saw a sign for free sushi and origami-folding in Cate Center. It's funny, in the dorms, everyone locks their doors. But I live near campus surrounded by college students in houses and I leave doors and windows open all the time. It's kind of like a hippie commune around certain areas.

The most popular groups and organizations on campus would be all of the Greek life as 1/3 of the campus belongs to one. I am involved in a sorority. I had not a clue what I was getting into but it truly has been a great experience and I have learned a lot about different kinds of girls in general. Some students leave their dorm rooms open but the majority don’t from my experience living in the Honors Dorms. Football is crazy popular like pizza here at OU other athletic events are recognized and well attended but not comparable to football is king attitude here. Guest speakers in the last two years have been amazing! We have had everything from Al Gore to George Bush senior. The theatre department here is also incredible and puts on the most amazing productions. I personally think dating in college is difficult as everyone is mostly headed in different directions with their life and career goals. If I am awake on a Tuesday at 2 AM I am either facebooking or studying for a test. There are ‘traditional events’ that take place here each year such as volunteer opportunities like the Big Event and Dance Marathon. Both are for a good cause. As mentioned earlier Greek life is huge at OU but it is not hard to make friends without being in one. Last weekend I studied one day and the next went to a local bar on campus corner, The Library, and casually hung out with friends. People party here often but it is not the only thing that happens on the weekends. On a Saturday night aside from drinking one can see what the campus union is doing, slumber, movies, dinner, games, concerts, etc. Off campus people generally go to other bars, shop, work, or go to other concerts from what I have heard.

Campus Activities Council is big, same with Greek life (which is huge). Athletic events are huge, and OU always has great guest speakers. I met a lot of my close friends through my sorority. There was always something going on. I didn't drink until I was 21 and there were always non-drinking activities on the weekends. There are lots of great Christian/church organizations to be a part of.

What traditions/events happen each year? Big Event, some greek rally's of some kind like scandals or something U-sing? i dunno I didn't do that shit. How often do people party? people party often. How important are fraternities/sororities? I'd say on our campus they are more important than most religions. most people in the real world do not agree with this hierarchy. What did you do last weekend? drank, climbed, made out, played video games. good weekend. What can you do on a Saturday night that doesn’t involve drinking? huh? What do you do off campus? climbing, actually everything. campus is a place for learning only.

Campus Activities Council is a big student org. Also Greek life is big and intramurals are always fun. I met my closest friends through my sorority. It’s easy to get close to people when you live with them and see them 24/7. If you’re awake at 2am the bars have closed and you’re either studying or your eating Pizza Shuttle. People party a few times a week, mostly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The university shut down drinking on campus a few years ago but there are still frat parties. They just aren’t as big as they used to be. Other than that people party at houses around town or at bars for those who are old enough. Every bar cards in Norman so you have to be careful if you go out underage. A typical party includes drinking, some dancing, probably drinking games and guitar hero or some form of entertainment. Norman is pretty cheap. Rent is cheap, food is cheap and drinks are cheap. On a typical night 20 bucks would buy you 3 to 6 drinks depending on what your poison is. Greek life is pretty big here. If you don’t drink, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Students go to the movies, bowling, date parties, whatever. You won’t be pressured to drink at parties if you don’t want to.

The most popular would be Sooner Nation which support all of our sports teams and then you would have the Panhellenic Association which is comprised of most of the sororities and fraternities. I am involved in Phi Sigma Pi which is an honor fraternity with men and women and provides me with an opportunity to give back to OU and the community by service, scholarship, and leadership. Yes our dorms are very laid back and everyone on the hall pretty much has an open door policy. It is very fun in the OU dorms because of the way they are set up and it provides for a great social atmosphere. Athletic events are popular in most sports and attendence wains for the less popular sport like gymnastics, but we do have great programs that all attract national contender hopes. Guest speakers are numerous on our campus and provide great political advice and we have had great professor come and speak. Former presidents Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush have recently visited withing the past year about political issues inflicting our nation. We have also had the Hotel Rwanda guy who saved many people from genocide in Rwanda. We are a diverse public speaking university. My closest friend were met in the dorms or through people I met in the dorms. Because of the great social atmosphere it was easy to make great aquaintances. At 2am I would probably be studying for my Economics test or some sort of test coming up because tests here are no slouching matter. Every year we host big event, the big red rally for OU-TX game, and many other events such as Save Darfur day with boxed shacks to help raise awareness. Partying is probably the same as any other decent sized campuses. I would say it is generally the norm. Frats and Sororities are huge at OU. They pride themselves on everything and are a bit snobby and stuck up here. Some are great while others can't get over themselves. Saturday Nights their is tons of stuff to do. Their is OKC downtown which has an awesome movie theatre along with the waterfront. You can go to the Bricktown area and watch a baseball game as well.

Greek scene is very big. Athletic events are huge, and there are a good number of quality quest speakers thanks to Boren. Thursday/Friday/Saturday is a big deal. Dont drink? Might look somewhere else...

Most popular groups are the sororities & fraternities, after that is CAC or Campus Activities Council which is in charge of all the campus activities throughout the year. I was a member of Delta Delta Delta, it was a sorority on campus with about 200 members. You go through recruitment in the fall. It's a great experience & a great ways to meet people & get connected on campus. I always left my door open. Athletics are so important. Football is a dynasty here. Guest speakers are pretty popular, I don't know too much about the theater. Dating well dating is a weird thing here. It seems that a lot of people get married right after college, so I guess dating is pretty important. I met my closest friends in Tri-Delta and through other friends. If I am awake at 2 am I am probably studying or finishing a project. Traditions are football games, the medieval fair, student art show. People out every thursday, friday and saturday on campus corner. Fraternities/Sororities are very important, but you don't have to be in one to get connected. last weekend I hung out with my friends & went to a local bar/pub. Saturday night there is plenty going on at the Union & you can always count on your friends to think of something fun. I camp, go to the city, shop, movies, normal stuff.

Greek life is a big part of OU and football is a pretty big deal here.
