University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about University of Wisconsin-La Crosse? Why?

Maria

I think one thing that UW-La Crosse is lacking on is their resources available for the number of students that they are accepting. So many students are applying and enrolling that the dormitories on campus are becoming very packed and some classes do not have enough lab space or professors to accompany the number of students needing totake those classes.

I think the worst thing about my school is the amount of general education classes required in undergraduate. I think that the Gen. Eds. should relate to a students major. If this was the case at my school I wouldn't be spending thousands of dollars for a course that had no benefit to me in furthering my knowledge for what I want to become. That is why this is the biggest set back at my school.

I wish that the sports teams were better and more prominent because nobody really goes to the sporting events on campus which is sad because the athletes are working incredibly hard to represent our school in competition, but nobody really goes to watch and support them. I also wish the girl to guy ratio was a little more even.

The worst thing about University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for me personally is the small size of the Modern Language Department. With society's focus on math, science, and technology, the liberal arts often receive cuts or have reduced budgets which means less variety of classes offered and limited offerings per semester. Also, the variety of professors and staff in quite small and if you don't like one professor - you might be stuck with that professor because he/she is the only one that teaches a class.

The worst thing about the school is the grading scale. At UW-L they use AB and BCs instead of A-, B+, B-, etc. For example, if your grade is between 88{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and 92{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} you receive an AB. There are many situations where this grading scale has hurt me instead of helped me. In various classes I have recieved an AB for a 91 or 92{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} in a class which results in a 3.5 in the GPA. At some other schools a 92{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} would result in an A-, which contributes to a GPA greater than 3.5.

One thing that bothers me about my University is the fact that they are not living sustainably and do not take into consideration the negative environmental impact they are causing for the planet.

As of right now there is a lot of construction going on and its really obnoxious to have to move around it. There is a plan of building more and it just seems that they just want to keeping adding unnecessary things to campus.

UW-La Crosse has a reputation for two major areas: athletics and drinking. I really think this does a diservice to the brilliant, creative students on campus who don't party or play a sport. Our school is actually very diverse and offers several different activities if you look past our reputation. The athletics program is fantastic, but so are the science, theatre, and health departments! The worst thing about La Crosse is that several fantastic aspects of our school get overshadowed by more well-known things.

Austin

I wish the school had more competitive major sports such as basketball and football.

Bianca

UW-L has a lot of events sponsored on campus, but student involvement isn't that high. There are often charity events put on by various campus communities and it almost always seems like the participation is fairly low at these events. Sporting events also rarely turn in a decent crowd--we aren't known for sports, and I doub't that'll change.

The worst thing about UW-La Crosse is that it is that it is not very diverse. Although we value diversity here on campus, we rarely see it in practice.

Rebekah

Transportation to La Crosse can be difficult sometimes, otherwise there is very little to say negative about La Crosse.

Rose

Although La Crosse is a lovely place, there is not exactly a big city nearby. I am a city dweller, so that is more of a personal preference. Also, it gets a bit chilly here in winter, but hey, its Wisconsin.

Sometimes I wish I went to a school that had a more well known theatre program but then I know I wouldn't like the people who attened that school and the atmosphere as much as La Crosse.

The worst thing about UW - LaCrosse is that it is expense for me as an out-of-state student to attend. I am from northeast Iowa and La Crosse is only an hour away from my hometown. I grew up visiting La Crosse often and was even born there. I like the location, the size of the college, and the people I have met there. My main concern is my tuition bill. I've already taken out all the student loans available for me and that is still not enough. I chose UW-L because of the Occupational Therapy Program.

Sometimes the wifi isn't the greatest, but that is usually because of people with wireless printers. I don't have a lot of bad things about the school.

Mariah

UW-L is a renowned school and although it has a variety of outstanding opportunities and ways to get involved, the food is less than satisfactory. Other campuses I have visited provide many more healthy and fresh choices than La Crosse, although the campus does have a pretty good selection usually.

Mercedes

It sounds cliche, but I absolutley love UW-LaCrosse. There is one thing though that everybody complains about...the food. The food here is not very good at all. I came into college excited to be able to eat at a "buffet" everyday. Unfortunatley with the food choices we have, its not exciting at all. my friends and I have made many comments to the head of the food program to incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies, and not have so much fried stuff. Hopefully this will change in the future!

The worst thing about UW- La Crosse is the size of the school and city. If you are the type of person who is used to a bigger city and lifestyle, this could be a big adjustment for you to get used to. There are some fun programs and events throughout the year, but not nearly as many opportunities as a bigger school or city.
