What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Ellen

Students leave their doors open, though less sophomore and junior year. Basketball games are great, football is getting better. I met my current roommate because she lived down the hall and my other best friends i met becuase they lived down the hall from my best friend from highschool. Other best friends i met on Habitat service trips and in classes. Saturday night of no drinking - go to a movie, the mall, hang out, go into town for ice cream, go ice skating in the city.. if im awake at 2am on a tuesday i better be doing homework or at a party because St. Patty s day was on a monday.

Social life hinges on campus activites. No real general party scene like at bigger schools. Parties tend to be withing activites, groups, pre- existing friends.

There are so many clubs and organizations on this campus to get involved in. Greek life is pretty big in that 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are involved, but there aren't houses on this campus, so it does not take over your life. There are also many many students that participate in Habitat for Humanity or other Service Break Trips. That is definitely a big aspect of this school. (Over 800 students a year participate in these). Villanova is VERY involved in Special Olympics and during that weekend you will find almost everyone volunteering in some way whether it is dedicating time to being in charge or a sport or just cheering on for moral support. You can also get involved in Blue Key (giving tours), Orientation, Student Government, Varsity/Club/Intermurals, and a lot more. As far as social life, the bars are right on the street the university is on, there are a lot of off campus parties hosted by frats and sports teams, people have parties in their rooms/apartments, and of course there is always Philadelphia which is just a train ride away.

campus ministry is huge, almost everyone seems to do a break trip. late nights are usually for girl talk or homework. clubs and meetings, usually related to either a sorority/campus ministry or sometimes p&j/media club/music group keep students way busy. novafest and homecoming are the two biggest events, and they are always fun :)

Jennifer

There are an unlimited number of clubs on campus and if you do not wish to join any of them you can create your own. Students in my dorm leave their doors open. There is a ton to do on the weekends, as well as alcohol free events every night. I always have something to do on campus and it's not necessarily alcohol related and I still always enjoy myself.

I think there are a lot of things to get involved in and there is a lot of service that students initiate and take part in, but although the competitiveness is a good thing, i dont like how you have to apply to do service. I do think in terms of the social scene there is not a lot to do on the weekends and in terms of parties and stuff like that I feel like you have to know someone to get anywhere. I like how my dorm theres always someone up and it is very comfortable almost like a little family where you know everyone in the dorm, not just on your floor. There is not a lot to do on campus, i do wish there were more things to do besides drinking and going to a party on campus.

-service groups are very popular, also blue key/ambassadors, sororities, sport teams, orientation, and special olympics -i am involved with relay for life which is a patient service/fundraiser for the american cancer society; it is a cancer walk held in april and raises ~$60000 each year from villanova students -students leave dorm room doors open freshman year, but not after that -men's basketball games are popular, but other sports do not draw a big crowd -guest speakers always draw a big crowd, whether it is because of extra credit offered or course requirements, or interest -theater productions usually sell out -the dating scene is not that bad, most people are not in committed relationships though -i met my closest friends in my freshman year dorm and in my freshman year classes -if i am awake at 2am on a tuesday i am studying -traditions include novafest, special olympics fall festival, saint thomas of villanova day, the day of service -people party usually party about 3 days per week -greek life is very important, most girls are involved in sororities -last weekend i went to happy hour and a habitat for humanity break trip reunion, babysat, and did homework and went to mass -nova has an organization devoted to non-drinking activities and there are always things going on on-campus -off campus you can go to the king of prussia mall which has everything you could want to do, and nova runs a shuttle if you dont have a car

I lived in a smaller dorm on a part of campus that was separated from most of the Freshman, my first year at Villanova. In this dorm, Delurey, I only closed my door to sleep and change. There was a trusting, open atmosphere about the community. I thought I would feel separated from the rest of my class and the events going on, but I really felt to be part of a smaller, more tight-knit community. I met most of my closest friends in this dorm. They were the poeple I lived around in Delurey. Now, however, I live in one of the two main sophomore dorms, and no one leaves their doors open. It is a much louder, "crazier" dorm than I lived in last year. Like I said above, the Basketball fans are very loyal. Last weekend Villanova was in the Sweet 16 in Detroit. There was a bunch of people who were interested in going, and a phone chain began. I went on a road trip to Detroit at 4:30 Am on Friday morning, after agreeing to go on Monday night. I had one of the best times of my life, that I will never forget. I left with one of my best friends, and came back with 13 new, great friends. (even though we lost the game!!)

Villanova provides many different opportunities for students to be involved with the campus and outside of the company. At the beginning of the school year, all students are able to go to one location to visit representitives of all of the clubs and activities they can get involved in. There are many guest speakers, cultural events, and theater shows, plays, and movies that occur all year long.

Christina

There are many opportunities for students to get involved. The campus activity team always has events going on on the weekends. There are free movies every fri, sat, and sunday nights.

Students are really involved here at Villanova with the most popular groups being Blue Key and Special Olympics. Sororities and Fraternities are also part of the social scence but not necessary. Villanova is passionate about its basketball team and games draw large crowds. Guest speakers such as Michelle Obama fill up stadiums and other smaller lectures are well attended. Tradition is also big on campus with Hoops Mania kicking off the basketball season and Nova Fest wrapping up the spring semester with a great day of activities concluded by a great band like the Goo Goo Dolls. Partying is what each student makes of it. Students often hold parties off campus and transportation to such can be difficult. Ticket parties occur a couple of times put on during the semester by frats. Tickets usually range from 20-30 dollars and are held at a bar in Philly. Philly is a great city to explore, but can be quite expensive. Restaurant week is popular and also Campus Philly day which allows students to explore the city at a low cost.

Sororities and fraternities are very popular. Club sports are also a big part of the school. Some of my best friends are in both my sorority and on club tennis with me. Everyone in the dorms leaves their doors open. My closest friend was met during orientation. People party throughout the week, mostly concentrated on the Thurs-Sat though. While Greek life does not run the school, it opens up many opportunities to get to know the university, its students, and all it has to offer. Sat nights do not have to include drinking. Off campus we go to dinner and shopping down the main line.

Shannon

Greek life dominates the social scene and those not included can often feel very left out. Students rarely leave doors open. Basketball games are extremely popular. The best traditions are the all day party on West Campus on the Saturday of Novafest, Fiji Island on the night before reading day and Hoops Mania. People usually party Thursday, Friday and Saturday of every week, unless they have too much work to do. The best thing I have done at Villanova was a Spring Break Habitat for Humanity trip to Myrtle Beach. I met amazing people and learned priceless lessons. These trips are very popular at Villanova, with over 400 students participating last March.

A lot of variety in activities! I'm pretty involved with the different service opportunities that Villanova offers. How social the dorms are depends on what dorm you are in - the smaller ones tend to be more friendly. A lot of people here meet, start dating and then get married in the Villanova chapel! If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, if not doing homework, I would likely be playing rock band or wii with my friends. A couple of great traditions are special olympics fall festival and novafest.

Ali

Students in dorms do leave doors open, usually good relations with neighbors. I met my closest friends because they live across the hall.

Tori

There is a lot to do at Villanova- the only problem is that everybody wants to do the activities, especially the popular ones like Blue Key, Special Olympics, and Orientation so you have to apply. The application process is competitive- but if you are unable to get into those clubs at first try, you can always apply again next year and there are plenty of other clubs to join on campus.

The social scene at Nova isn't crazy, and I wouldn't call it a party school either. But I've never been pressed with having nothing to do. Even if we aren't drinking, there's one of the biggest malls in the country located close by, and tons of restaurants down the street. Dorm halls range from small former-houses to huge 5 story, multi-winged buildings. You get a different experience with dorm life depending on your dorm hall, and I've lived in both large and small. I met my best friends in the tiny dorm building we had freshman year, where we kept our doors open all the time and did everything together. But this year in the larger building the doors stay closed, and I don't really know my neighbors. It's all a matter of the effort you make, really.

The most popular groups on campus are Blue Key which gives tours around campus, Intramurals which provides a variety of sports, as well as Special Olympics which holds the yearly competition. Within the dorms, a majority of students keep their doors closed. There are however special communities in which everyone within the dorm is very friendly and keeps their doors open. Because the student body is 6,400 the school is relatively small and although you do not know everyone, you can usually draw some sort of connection with everyone. There are a lot of strong sororities and fraternities influence on campus. Greek life is not allowed on campus but students usually have their letters in their windows to represent what sorority/fraternity they are in.

The men's basketball team is very popular, so the winter months often revolve around games on the weekends at the Wachovia Center. It is a good way to show your school spirit, and enjoy the company of your peers.
