What should every freshman at Whitworth University know before they start?

Look for a school where you feel you can fit in AND grow. College is about being challenged to see new ideas so that you can form your own. Do not be paranoid that you will choose the wrong school. Any place where you learn something useful is the right place.

My advice would be this: make the best decision you can based on what you know, but don't be afraid to change. College is an extremely important time in one's life. It is important to research several schools in order to make the best decisions about which school is right; however, even with a lot of research, not everything will always work out. Know that it is okay to make changes because transfering is always an option. Students should always a attend a college that meets both their academic and social needs. If academics are too strongly emphasized, students will often become discouraged and grow tired of the challenge. The best college experiences occur when students choose a school that allows them to be themselves. A school where they can feel comfortable with the education the receive and the person they are allowed to become. College is a time with a lot of unknowns so don't be afraid to change and make adjustments as needed - simply enjoy the ride because it may just be the time of your life!

Make sure that the college is really a place you want to go to. You'll be spending a lot of time there, so it's important that you want to be there and that you're willing to make new friends and put yourself out there a little more. Don't be afraid to go far away from home either. College is a time when you can go out and do your own thing without as many responsibilities. It's about finding yourself and what you want to achieve in life - limiting yourself, I think, would only cause regrets. Get involved too! It's fun to meet new people, try new things and make a fool out of yourself every once in a while. It may be embarrassing at the time but it's a fun story for later! Also, don't just go to a school because they have a good sports team to play on. Pay just as much attention to academics - it is far more likely that you will use knowledge rather than athletic ability to succeed in life.
