Over the years, we have asked college upperclassmen and college grads to share their college advice for college-bound students who are just starting college. In addition to the usual suggestions about taking classes and grades seriously and making sure to finish with a degree, we learned a lot about some of the other aspects of college living. Here are just a few excerpts from our collection of advice from those who have been there.
Before I ever started college, I wish I’d known…..
- I’d have to learn to sleep with the lights on, radio blaring, and the phone ringing (bring earplugs!).
- That college isn’t all fun and games. It’s hard work and takes a lot of self-discipline.
- Not to get so busy that I don’t have time for people. Schedule time to just relax and have some fun.
- That getting used to a college roommate is like getting married without being engaged. It takes a great deal of compromise, lots of give and take to live constantly with one person. I should let those minor irritations go by, but if something really important bothers me, I should talk it over.
- That I should be not afraid to ask questions.
- That if I keep up with the reading I can avoid the last minute panic.
- The way to remember is to review, review, review.
- Loneliness is expected. It takes time to form close friendships.
- There is more learning in college than just what happens in the classroom.
- To take advantage of on-campus events like concerts, clubs and discussion groups.
- Don’t go home every weekend – it prevents you from connecting with others, getting to know your campus and making it your home.
- Sign up for a class you know nothing about – stretch yourself.
- It’s OK to ask for help. Sign up for tutoring early on. Don’t wait until you’re drowning.
- Participate in study groups.
- Establish relationships with your professors – they are great people to know.
