There’s something about celebrating the New Year that is liberating. Not only is it the perfect time to say goodbye to anything bad that may have happened in the last 12 months, but it’s also a great opportunity for you to identify some things you may want to improve upon moving forward. It’s a chance to take personal inventory and really focus on making things better for you and those around you.
Sure, you could put together a list of tired, old New Years resolutions like getting more exercise or eating healthier, but that’s not going to help you figure out how to pay for college, is it? No. Instead, we encourage you to take a look at these scholarship resolutions (many of which can help you in other areas of your life, too!) that could potentially improve your financial forecast.
Stop Procrastinating

Are you a permanent resident of Procrastination? It’s time to apply for a visa and move to the land of Never Late. When you put off items on your to-do list and wait until the very last minute to apply for scholarships, you not only cause yourself unnecessary stress, but you also increase your chances of making critical mistakes. It’s time to break out your organizer and actually use it this year. And, don’t forget to calendar important dates, as well. Once your stress levels decrease and you no longer feel rushed, you may actually find that it can be fun to apply for scholarships.
Get Organized

Okay, this goes hand-in-hand with item number one. Make a space on your desk or cabinet to store all your scholarship materials. Each scholarship should have its own folder and a checklist that you can review to ensure you have everything you need to apply for scholarships to college. You’ll also want to keep a folder with copies of your letters of recommendations, transcripts, résumés, awards/honors, and financial records, as well as any other items you may use on more than one application. Don’t forget to keep electronic copies, too. The more organized you are, the easier it will be to complete applications.
Be Confident

When you’re completing scholarship applications, do you quietly think that there’s no chance in hell you will win? Stop doing that. You’re derailing your scholarship train before it can even leave the station. Instead, repeat to yourself, “I think I can, I think I can” and soon you will be winning scholarships. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to believe in you? Make 2018 the year of positive energy, and watch the sparks fly!
Never Give Up!

The easiest thing in the world to do is give up. It takes little energy and no effort, but it’s also the one thing that will guarantee that you NEVER win a scholarship. This year, make a resolution to follow through with all your plans and goals — especially those related to how to get a scholarship. Even if you don’t win, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you never quit, and that alone makes you a winner in our book.
