In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of New Mexico.
  3. Must be accepted into the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must declare his/her intent to practice as a health professional in a designated shortage area within the state of New Mexico. Designated shortage areas are as follows: community health centers; federally qualified health centers; homeless healthcare centers; Indian health service; migrant health centers; non-profit centers/clinics (501(c)3 IRS verification required); non-profit hospitals (501(c)3 IRS verification required); rural health clinics.
  6. Must enroll at least half time.

Description: The purpose of the Medical Loan-For-Service is to increase the number of physicians in the state which have experienced shortages of health professionals by making educational loans to students entering medical school. As a condition of each loan, the student shall declare his/her intent to practice as a health professional in a designated shortage area within the state of New Mexico. For every year of service provided in a designated shortage area within New Mexico, a portion of the loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness. Penalties will be assessed if the service agreement is not satisfied.

Additional Information: The purpose of the New Mexico Health Professions Student Loan-for-Service Program is to increase the number of professionals in areas of the state that have experienced shortages by making educational loans to students seeking degrees in the health field. Please note: Each student must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to determine eligibility for this program. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. As a condition of each loan, the student shall declare his/her intent to practice in a chosen health field in a designated shortage area in New Mexico. For every year of service, a portion of the student's loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100 percent of the loan is eligible for forgiveness. Penalties may be assessed if the service agreement is not satisfied. The Health Professional Advisory Committee will screen applications and rank individuals based on the applicant's academic eligibility, ability to describe the need for the program, and intent to work in a designated shortage area as approved by the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Students will receive award or denial notification via U.S. mail.

Award Amount: It must not exceed $25,000 a year  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.
