In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must major in criminal justice.
  3. Must be a resident of North Carolina.
  4. Must be a full-time student.
  5. Must attend one of the following eligible state institutions: Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Western Carolina University, and Winston-Salem University.
  6. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate student.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Description: This award is available for North Carolina students who are enrolled full time at an eligible state institution. The student must be an undergraduate majoring in criminal justice and demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association Undergraduate Criminal Justice Scholarship is a state program, administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA). The award is based on the financial need of the student. First priority in selection is given to the child or step-child of a North Carolina Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff. Second priority is given to a child or step-child of a North Carolina law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty. Third priority is given to a child or step-child of a North Carolina Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff who is deceased or retired (regular or disability). Fourth priority is given to an academically eligible North Carolina criminal justice student with demonstrated financial need.

Award Amount: $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester)  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Program information is available from the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) website. Applications may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office (FAO) at eligible institutions. Applicants must submit a completed application, official transcript, and a statement of career goals to the sheriff of the county in North Carolina where they permanently reside and request a letter of recommendation. These materials should be sent by the sheriff's office to the FAO. Applicants of the scholarship are nominated by the FAO and sent to the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) for processing. NCSEAA forwards the application materials to NC Sheriff's Association for recipient selection. NCSEAA will notify recipient of the award. Deadlines for this program vary by institution. The student should check with the financial aid office at his/her institution for the institutional deadline. Deadlines generally range from mid-March to mid-July.
