Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies, all qualified applicants will be considered depending on the amount of funding available.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Texas resident.
  3. Must attend an eligible public community college, public technical college, or public state college in Texas. Public State Colleges include: Lamar State College at Orange; Lamar State College at Port Arthur, and Lamar Institute of Technology.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older and not have completed a associate's or a bachelor's degree.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be enrolled at least half time (six semester credit hours).
  7. Must demonstrate financial need.

Description: This award is for Texas students who are attending or planning to attend a public, two-year college in the state of Texas. The student must demonstrate financial need and have an Expected Family Contribution of $2,000 or less.

Additional Information: The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program is a state program, administered through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, established to provide grant aid to financially needy students enrolled in Texas public two-year colleges. In addition to meeting the program requirements, students must: register for the Selective Service or sign a statement of exemption; not be eligible for a TEXAS Grant; and must not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a controlled substance. Eligibility for this program is determined by the financial aid office at the student's college. Students must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $4,800 or to be eligible. The EFC is calculated using a federal formula from information provided on the FAFSA. Contact the college financial aid office at a participating institution for additional information.

Award Amount: The award amount may vary based on the type of institution the recipient is attending. For the current academic year, the maximum amount is: $5,876 per year for public universities and state college students; $2,700 per year for public community college students; and $4,600 per year for public technical college students. Students who continue in college and who meet program academic standards can receive awards for up to 75 semester credit hours, for four years, or until they receive an associate's degree, whichever comes first.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

To apply, interested students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The FAFSA should be submitted for state scholarship/grant consideration as soon as possible after January 1st each year for award consideration for the upcoming award year. In addition to a complete application, each participating college or university may require students to submit additional forms or supplemental information before scholarship eligibility can be determined.
